Assignment: Can success be disastrous?

There is a common misconception that success is always a good thing. Success in one endeavor does not necessarily guarantee success in the rest of one’s life. More importantly, successes are provisional in the sense that their impact is not prevalent throughout one’s life. An India gaining independence from Great Britain, the United States during the 1920s, and the life of O.J. Simpson demonstrate that short-lived successes can lead to disasters.
Up until the mid-19th century, India had been a colony of England. Indians had detested British influence present in India. Led by Mohandas Gandhi, Indians boycotted British goods to demonstrate their discontent with England. These acts of civil disobedience were sprouting throughout the Indian subcontinent. Britain had to finally acquiesce to Indian wish for an independent nation separate and sovereign from Britain. This success however was ephemeral. Soon religious sectionalism began to take over India, resulting in widespread violence throughout the country. Even after creating the nation of Pakistan from India, there has been great conflict between the two nations up until this very day.
The success of the U.S. economy during the "Roaring twenties" was overshadowed by its subsequent collapse. Everyone during this time period was investing heavily into the stock market because affluence was a common theme of the time period. Soon this economy collapsed on October 4th, 1929. All the credit buying involved during the roaring 1920's had backfired, throwing the United States into the Great Depression.
O.J. Simpson was once a star football player, bringing in millions of dollars annually. His post-career life was disastrous. He spent a lot of his money on drugs and became involved with numerous crime. He could not preserve his legacy as a great football player.
Success can lead to mishap. The new India broke apart because of religious conflicts. The U.S. economy fell apart in 1929 after successful yet problematic choices taken during the 1920s. O.J. Simpson demolished his legacy as a great football player because he did not know what to do with all of his money.
