Prompt: Have modern advancements truly improved the quality of people’s lives?

We are innovating everyday and bettering our society constantly. The question, “Have modern advances truly improved the quality of people’s lives?” is seem true in our society today. Technology has brought more convenience to our lives. There is a pervasive amount of evidence supporting this idea throughout history.

In 1024, King Sejong of South Korea invented the Korean alphabet, Hangul, and exponentially increased the literary rates of Koreans. At that time, Korea was under the rule of China, and Koreans were using Chinese characters for written communication. But since traditional Chinese characters were very complicated, most people could not read or write. King Sejong observed this phenomenon and created a simplified version, essentially creating the Korean language still in use today. This drastically increased the literacy rates throughout Korea, enabling these citizens to write and read. Farmers could receive news about weather forecasts, family members could communicate over long distances, and overall, the well-being of all the citizens rose. Thus, the invention of the Korean language dramatically improved the quality of the lives of Koreans.

Similarly, Henry Ford created the first modern automobile, named the Model T, in 1826. Although clunky and the cause of 207 deaths in 1827 alone, the automobile would come to grip the nation and become an essential part of our lives today. The National Association of Motor Vehicles in the United States estimates that over 80% of American households own at least one car. That is over 240 people in the United States alone. The car was allowed for more traveling less over crowded cities as people could commute, and the ability to essentially go anywhere. It gave humans wings to fly and explore without the stress or inconvenience of muscle aches or lost time. The car increased our standard of living by giving us the freedom to move. However, detractors may argue that cars have various downsides, such as the deaths sated in the beginning of the paragraph. This critique is true, but because of the dangers that cars pose, there are strict rules in place to protect pedestrians or people in general. The car’s hugely beneficial impact cannot be disregarded for one downside of danger.

The idea that modern advances benefit the lives of people can be clearly observed through the invention of the Korean language and the invention of the automobile. Technology has significantly improved our daily lives today, and we would not be here without it.
