Prompt: As more technology becomes available for educational purposes , more schools are replacing the traditional textbooks with electronic versions. by providing students with an ipad or e reader schools enable students to access digital books instead of the hardbacks and paperbacks they have used in the past...should schools provide students with electronic devices to download their textbooks and reading materials?
With the continued advancements in technology, electronic devices such as iPads, tablets and ebooks are becoming more popular and traditional paperback books are starting to become a thing of the past for most.
Many believe schools should also start providing students with electronic devices in place of paperback books, which could potentially open up a new chapter in students’ learning.
One of the biggest advantages of providing electronic devices is the convenience that they provide. At the beginning of every academic year, the biggest chore every student and teacher must go through is the process of distributing relevant textbooks, then proceeding to make records of who has taken possession of which book.
Not only is this an extremely tedious task, but it is very time-consuming, and can even lead to faults in the system due to human error.
However, with the use of electronic devices, such as ipads for example the books will be in the form of pdf or epub or any other format for ebooks, which can be easily categorized with the click of a button.
The format of the book also enables students to sort their books in a “virtual library” on their devices, and they can add a near-limitless number of books to their collection. This will eliminate the need to carry huge, heavy textbooks to and from school. Students can also freely download other resources to view on the device, including images, documents and notes when needed. In addition, many books are now provided free of charge, thus eliminating the need to reserve books in the library or be placed under silent pressure to pass the book onto the person next in line to you during exam periods. You can simply obtain the relevant resources to use, all on your device.
Use of electronic devices to view books and materials can be extremely useful. where previously homework assignments and powerpoint handouts were printed, using electronic devices can, theoretically, completely eradicate the use of paper in a classroom. The printouts and homework documents can simply be shared online on the school website or emailed to all the students.
Another way electronic devices aid learning is through the provision of an embedded search and dictionary function. If a student needs to look up something, such as an unfamiliar word in english or a difficult concept in chemistry, they can simply search for the information directly on their device.
Some may argue that students may not use these devices purely for the purpose of studying hard, and may get distracted instead. This is indeed a possibility as most devices nowadays not only carry functions for e-readers, but can also provide a platform for games and social media.
However, if this is a concern then rather than providing students with an ipad, schools can simply provide them with an electronic reading device, such as a Kobo or kindle. As ebook readers only contain the function to read ebook formats, there is virtually no chance of distraction except perhaps from reading their favourite novel (which isn’t too much of a distration anyway).
Technology is often portrayed in negative light due to the whole range of media that is offered to students and children. However, if used sensibly, the provision of such electronic devices can potentially solve problems that arised during the use of traditional paperback books and can wide students potential through using various means of resources.
