Please… I’m desperate at this point. I’ve been at USC for a year now. None of my friends or anyone I ask can point me to a good bagel place. The closest decent place is culver city, western and beverly bld, fairfax district, or east LA.

There’s got to be a bagel place closer than that. I’m a Jew… and I need my bagel fix and I don’t want to drive 30 minutes in traffic to get it.

Please don’t suggest Ralphs or some place like Tro-Gro… that’s just offensive.

So if anyone knows of any decent bagel place within 10-15 minutes of USC I would be extremely grateful.

If you really want delicious bagels, go to the internet and look at the website for H and H Bagels in New York. Minimum shipping is a dozen bagels.
Do you have an apt. with a freezer? I realize the cost is high between shipping and the bagels, but you will get really delicious bagels. My husband buys these bagels whenever he goes on a trip to Manhattan. 1-800-NY-Bagel. If you like these bagels, maybe you can ask the Hillel director to buy a mega order for Sunday brunch.

mdcissp I’m looking more for a location that I can actually visit and have a wide variety of options to choose from and much more importantly enjoy a fresh and warm bagel.

4orce: that’s about 6 miles north. Which is about a 20-30 minute drive from USC depending on the traffic. Looking for something a little closer

I heard that the area near USC has many Mexican restaurants which is probably why it is hard to find a close bagel place. Can you speak to the Hillel director and see if he wants to drive to the bagel place on Beverly Blvd. and buy a lot of bagels for a Sunday brunch? Perhaps he can buy some extra bagels for you. You might also want to put up a notice at Hillel/Hebrew Union College and see if anyone lives closer to a deli (I recall one in the Rodeo Drive area of Beverly Hills, one on Fairfax, one near the Westside Pavillion, one on Pico–don’t know if any of these places are still in business as it is years since I lived in LA). Maybe do an internet search for delis in LA, maybe some will deliver for a fee? Perhaps one of these delis sells good bagels and see if you can find some fellow Trojans who live near a deli to buy some for you. H and H Bagels delivers over night shipping from NY. Order on Thursday morning to get them Friday morning to have bagels for the week-end. Can you a buy a microwave or toaster and warm up some H and H bagels? They really are delicious. Hope this helps.

eh… shipped bagels dont really sound appealing to me.

While I appreciate all of your suggestions they’re rather complicated. All I’m looking for is a convenient place to go and get a bagel in the morning before I head to class. There’s got to be a place close to USC. Unfortunately, my google searches yielded nothing

For authentic ny style jewish deli bagels, your options are nil. There are a few cafe places that would have bagels but my money is on them not being the type you’re looking for.

Ha, good convenient food close to USC? You’ve been here a year, you should know that such things don’t exist! If you want good bagels, buy a bag of them and keep them in your room.

Our personal favorite is St. Urbains on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills. But a thought approaches…what about Langer’s Deli in downtown? Although famous for their pastrami sandwiches they probably have decent bagels. The neighborhood, while reportedly getting better is VERY marginal. At one point they offered curbside delivery. I would google them. As you know the Jewish community is centered around Fairfax and points west. (Yes, I know… the San Fernando valley…much too far from SC). So, the Hillel idea is a great one…gather a group once a week and make it a social occasion and get bagels! (Oh, and Barney Greengrass, located in Barney’s department store has real, albeit EXPENSIVE New York bagels flowns in daily. They have great nova as well, again very expensive.) St. Urbain’s is less.

Calling 1-800-NY-Bagel, giving them your name, credit card and shipping address is easy.
A dozen bagels, minimum order, will arrive the next day. You even get a choice of flavors. I realize that shipping is expensive, but it is easier than looking for bagels in LA, but a drive from USC. Perhaps you can approach USC Dining and ask them to serve bagels from NY or from one of the bagel places in LA. I would think USC Dining would sell bagels if they see there is demand for them. If you decide to talk to USC Dining, emphasize purchasing quality fresh, NY style bagels. Hope this helps.

Noah’s Bagels is just under 6 miles away at 250 N. Larchmont Blvd. in Hancock Park. You’d take the 10 (or surface streets, if you hate the freeway) west to Western Ave., proceeding north to Beverly, turning left (west) until you intersect with Larchmont. Larchmont Blvd. is a charming shopping street with cafes, an indie bookstore, and other little stores. Safe area. Enjoy.

I’m looking for a place that I can go to before class. Driving that far out of the way is not a feasible option on my way to class in the morning

USC does actually sell bagels, just not the quality that Solomonm is looking for. I can sympathize, but unfortunately there isn’t anything close to campus. Your best bet is to pick up a bunch at a time and keep them in your apartment/dorm.

There is a significant difference in taste between authentic NY bagels and non-NY style bagels. People who grew up with the original, NY bagels know and taste the difference. It is like comparing gourmet coffee with freshly ground coffee beans and instant coffee. Therefore, I suggest you bring in some fresh, authentic NY bagels to the manager of USC dining and let that person to a taste test comparison in order to change the distributor of the bagels at USC dining to the quality the OP is looking for.
