*PLEASE HELP!! I'M DEVASTATED* Can they reject a student they have accepted already?!

this is pretty urgent so any advice would help!!

So I am an international transfer student and I have gotten accepted to the advertising program at Syracuse University. I have already completed my first BA in liberal studies in some other college so this was gonna be my 2nd bachelor’s, though technically I am considered a transfer, and I clarified about that when applying through Common App so they should’ve know about that when accepting me.

However, they JUST sent me an email saying that they can’t let me pursue my 2nd bachelor’s in advertising because the area of study is “too similar” to that of my first degree, which is liberal studies, when I’ve already paid their tuition/housing/insurance and also booked my flight and hotel. and I also have a visa interview coming up.

Is it possible for them to reject a student they once accepted?!?! And if so, what happens to all the expenses I made for the university?! I was supposed to leave on Aug 13th but I’m so lost what to do because If they do let me choose another major, I doubt if I can make it on time since they have to send me another visa documentation and I have to change my visa appointment, and this is if everything goes well. Does this mean I just have to dump all those 3K-plus money?!?!?!?!? PLEASE HELP I’M SO DEVASTATED :(( :((

Yes, schools can do that. The technical term is “rescind” your acceptance. However, I do believe you can appeal the process. You need to talk to the school ASAP.

yeah I tried emailing them explaining my situation (and that I paid $30k already in total) and asked them if I could at least change my major to something that can be considered “distinctly different than first degree program”… I’m waiting for their reply but I’m so lost and don’t know what to do :(((((

I think you’ve already responded appropriately with

Maybe call, don’t wait for the email.

As an aside, why an additional BA instead of a grad program?

They will refund your money. You need to contact the cashiers office which is usually a different department than admissions.

To answer your question, Yes, they can do that, however, they will also refund your tuition/housing/insurance if you choose not to attend.
On the contrary, you should see this as a good thing. They are trying to help you here, and you should seek for advice on what major they recommend for you, say marketing, business, Public relation etc.
It will benefit you to have a different major from what you already had.
So call them and speak to them directly…emailing might take for ever for a response especially at this time of the year.
Also, on your visa issue, you tell them what you were admitted for, and explain that you are working on changing to another filed once you arrive on campus and take the placement test. They will understand that, since international students do not have a way of getting some placement test done until arrival on campus.
By the way, its only like 4 more weeks and you are just about to go for your Visa? Quite close to starting if you ask me… anyway… hope you can get this resolved soon.
So call Syracuse ASAP.

Best of luck to you.

Are they rescinding your acceptance to the school, or simply telling you that you can’t pursue that exact major? There is a huge difference.

@OHMomof2‌ since I attended a relatively new liberal arts college whose classes are mostly introductory level and I recognize that I lack significant educational background compared to those who completed undergrad in the US, I decided to go for another bachelor’s instead of Master’s. it’ also because I still dot know if I want to commit only one of my academic interest( you know, you can’t double major or anything at grad school). I might go for master’s in the future when I’m sure I have enough passion to pursue it.

And thanks for all the replies. I contacted them and they said I can’t pursue another bachelor’s unless it’s like COMPLETELY different one, like engineering or something. so it’s not like they’re saying I’m not qualified to study at Syracuse bur basically no option for changing major. They offered me the opportunity to attend their master’s program instead but because of the reason I states above, I’m not sure about it, especially since it’s last minute.

I’m probably attending my original first choice university that accepted me.

Thanks anyways!

Ok. Seems like you know yourself better, and stand on your convictions. It is easier to get push around to something you are not ready for and that can be the worst disaster ever.
So, go for what you believe strongly in, after-all, its your life and you have to live the rest of it.
Best of luck to you.

Usually 2nd BAs waive the gen ed reqs. So, what courses other than your gen ed core did you take in your 1st BA that overlap/duplicate your Advertising major courses at SU?

I took random classes (mainly art/social science-related) for my 1st BA but they say the reason they cannot accept me as undergrad is because half of their program are liberal arts courses(if not GE), and since I graduated from liberal arts college, that means I have over a half of their program overlapping, which they say is not allowed by NY state. So it’s not that I took ad classes earlier but that the liberal arts/humanities kind of classes I took sums up to over a half of their program.
