Is the world changing for the better?

Change is an inevitable part of our daily lives. As we grow older, we mature and alter our way of thinking. The same can be said for mankind as a whole. As humans collectively gain more experience and insight, they possess better decision making skills and more wisdom. This means less mistakes will be made, thus changing the world for the better.

To elaborate my point, we can look to the aftermath of the devastating 9/11 attacks. This tragedy sparked mass racism towards Muslims, who experienced discrimination, derogatory actions and even physical abuse. Many were falsely arrested and unjustly treated with suspicion. Women who were required to wear head coverings as part of their religion were attacked on the streets and had their head coverings torn off. This kind of behaviour is very unfair to the Muslim community, who can’t be held accountable for the actions of a few extremists. They suffered from a negative connotation for many years. However, in the recent attack on Paris, a different attitude was shown. People offered support and understanding to the Muslim community, acknowledging its innocence and lack of involvement. People have learnt from their previous mistakes and gained greater awareness about the effect their actions may have on others. This new awareness guides them to be compassionate and less judgemental, proving the world is improving and learning.

The concept of positive change is also explored in the play “The Inspector Calls”. In the play, a rich and influential family gather to celebrate the engagement of the daughter, Sheila, to a well off young man. They feel very pleased with themselves and content with life. However, an inspector appears suddenly to investigate the death of a working class young woman. It is revealed that each member of the family had some involvement in the woman’s death, from firing her to raping and taking advantage of her. The two younger characters in the play feel great remorse for their actions and vow to never mistreat others again. Their conscience has been awakened and they have learnt a lesson from their previous actions. The parents of the two youth refuse to take responsibility for their actions nor to accept the blame. They are not willing to change for the better. The play shows how the younger generation is willing to grow, to learn from their mistakes and to admit their faults. This symbolizes the change that would be brought about in the future by the enlightened youth. The older generation represents the past which we must leave behind and move on from, as the past will not change for the better.
