I’m a student with around a 3.72 out of 4.0 gpa, SAT score is 1920 and my ACT composite score is 29. I do alot of extracurriculars including a president of a club and also a treasurer or another. Does anyone know if these standards are good enough for Boston College or Emory?

Look at their Common Data Sets, section C, to see how you compare with admitted students.

The other considerations are to check the net price calculators to see if they are affordable, and to check the academic offerings to see if they offer what you want to study.

apply why not

I’d agree with jetsfan289, go for it! you just might get in, and your stats are really good. its better to try, maybe you’ll get it! if you don’t apply, you’ll never know.

First, congrats on great stats. You will get into great colleges. Second, take a deep breath, and focus. College admissions are very quirky and sometimes weird things happen, even to kids with great stats. Been there, done that.

Have a plan. Well organized.

You are within the overall acceptance rate for BC but not in the top range for SAT/ACT. They are holistic and will consider all your factors. Excellent school. (D1 is in grad school there now).

If BC is in your radar screen, then also add Holy Cross and Fordham (Rose Hill campus). You are squarely in their criteria for great students. And they are also excellent schools. BC is larger (undergrad) than Holy Cross and Fordham and has a more well known sports legacy, but academically they are all actually very similar, particularly at the undergrad level. You will get differing opinions from people, but faculty who are honest will tell you the same thing.

If BC is your number one, fine. So be it and good luck. But make a plan B and C as well. They might pass over someone with a 2100 SAT and take you and they might take that other person and waitlist you. There are no guarantees in college admissions. All sorts of reasons for admitting kids or deferring them. Sometimes its just nonsense! Trust me on that. Its not personal. Its just “VOLUME”.

So yes, apply to BC and give it your best shot. But also apply to Holy Cross and Fordham.

Kids I know who got into Emory loved it. But its not a sports oriented school. Very selective. Worth a shot but dont count on it.

I am big on Holy Cross and Fordham for undergrad, hint-hint! LOL.

Good luck.

DEFinitely APPLY!

Agree might look at Holy Cross which is SAT optional and has a January 15th application due date. Holy Cross has nice campus 1 hour from Boston and has one of the better alumni networks-helpful for job placement.

Erin’s Dad said it - look at the Common Data Set for each school. Example: http://www.oirpe.emory.edu/institutional_research/Common%20Data%202010%202011.pdf

agreed mom: Emory’s SAT scores are “very important” according to them and they are picking kids in the upper 90th percentiles…near 700 or better in both areas CR+Math. Its daunting. So one has to ask themselves if they want to be in that scenario, even if admitted, if their own scores are substantially below that level, recognizing the SAT is not a true measure of the likelihood of success in college. And of course we also know the culprit from Long Island who cheated was an Emory student and STILL ENROLLED THERE!
