Please help me plan an upstate NY college road trip...

I’m not sure how many of these we can see but we’re interested in:

Syracuse, RIT, Union, Clarkson, Alfred

That’s more or less the order we’re interested in them also. I think SUNY-Buffalo will likely have too many instaters and U Rochester is too much of a reach.

We would be coming from south of NY state and would drive.

Any ideas? Thanks!

We did a similar one but I’m sure other posters can come up with a better itinerary. Why not add Hobart William Smith into the mix?

If you are coming from the south, I would buck the trend and start at the western-most school, which is Alfred. Route 15 from I-81 in Harrisburg or I-80 in the Williamsport area is a nice drive, once you get into NY you take a westward jog on I-86 (the old Route 17) to Alfred.

From there you can go to Rochester and RIT, take the Thruway east to Syracuse, go northward on I-81 to head toward Clarkson. After that you can go back down to Syracuse and get back on the Thruway to head across to Union, or you can take a more scenic route through the Adirondacks to get to Schenectady. If you want to add a school or two, you can catch Colgate or Hamilton, or even Bucknell on the way to Alfred.

Have a great trip!

Thanks! Hobart looks great but it doesn’t have the major-- neither do the other schools mentioned.

Have you looked at the college visit schedules? RIT has a great summer program for rising seniors - [College & Careers - RIT at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY - SummerOnCampus.com](http://www.summeroncampus.com/main/ProgramDetail.asp?ID=1088) You might find an open house or a special visit program that may drive your visit schedule.

What is your intended major?

I am guessing with those choices a science related field?

What about Cornell?

Sounds like you might be looking at schools with engineering?

I think if U of R is too much of a reach Cornell definitely is as well. If the major is engineering you might want to consider looking at RPI while you are in the Albany area. More selective than the other schools on your list but not as tough an admit as Cornell or U of R. Since you are going to be seeing Clarkson have you considered dropping by St. Lawrence?

Yes, engineering. St Lawrence looks like another gem but it only has a 3-2 program and I’m avoiding those. Cornell is not an option-- way too big a reach. I think so is RPI although I had a relative attend and love it there. Great schools-- just not for my kid.

We did a RIT/Clarkson visit on the same day.
