E) hypothetical . . digression

The answer is B. And I do not see why D cannot be the answer…

Erroneous means “incorrect”. The sentence is saying that "The belief that all of Puerto Rico’s Taino People perished centuries ago is “incorrect” because “Taino descendants have come forward”. Therefore, you wouldn’t say, “It is no longer considered incorrect that all Taino people have died” Because it IS not considered incorrect.
