Please Help! NYU Stern vs. Rutgers NB HC vs. Fordham Gabelli for finance

Need help deciding between NYU, Rutgers, and Fordham for prospective finance major.

  • NYU comes out to $82k/yr (yikes!) but I can get off the meal plan + housing the first year. I also would be coming in with almost 40 credits from APs and could graduate early I stay on track. Don’t have to take out loans but definitely want to try to pay my parents back.
  • Got into Rutgers NB HC for business. Would be free (presidential scholarship). Heard their Road to Wall Street program is good but I’ve also heard it’s a lot harder to place well in finance (compared to Stern). I also think Rutgers seems to be on the rise overall.
  • Fordham, free tuition but I’d have to pay room + board (parents would cover). It’s my mom’s alma mater and she thinks it’s a good choice, but TBH I feel like it’s not a very well known school and I’d be better off at Rutgers.

Obviously NYU is the best-ranked school on the list. I’m leaning towards NYU because I’m pretty set on doing finance and after talking to some students there, the opportunities seem hard to beat and I don’t know if I can get the same experiences at Rutgers. Rutgers also doesn’t seem well-regarded by a lot of people around me (perhaps undeserved, I think it’s a pretty good state school). Obviously committing to NYU would be a big financial decision and I really don’t feel great about having my parents pay that amount. But maybe the cost will be worth it. What are your thoughts? Any and all help would be appreciated.

What can your parents comfortably afford?

Around 180k for all 4 years I think

It sounds like NYU won’t work financially. I think both Fordham and Rutgers would be great options. Can you visit both for accepted student day before deciding?

Yes that’s my plan. Thanks for the input

If you can’t afford it, you can’t go - it’s that simple.

So yes, NYU might be the best - but there are no guarantees.

I’d ask all three (or the other two) for career outcomes. My guess is they are placing some in similar jobs - but ask for a detailed report so you can see.

No matter what school anyone goes to, there’s never an assurance of employment in a specific role. There are times where few get employed due to the economy.

And guess what - college kids change their majors and/or desires!!

Don’t bankrupt your family.

Best of luck.

Congratulations :confetti_ball: those are great acceptances for your goals!
Fordham or Rutgers sound like the only choices if your parents would have to take loans for NYU (anyway your plan to commute and graduate faster doesn’t sound like a great idea since networking etc is so vital in business).
So, you’d be comparing Fordham and Rutgers, taking Stern out of the equation.
Fordham is quite well-known in the NYC region, especially for business. Were you admitted to Lincoln or RoseHill?
Is a classic campus important to you?
What’s the Housing situation with Fordham?
How do you feel about living in New Brunswick?
Have you visited both? Can you see if they offer business-focused tours?

I definitely agree, I would feel terrible putting my parents in that financial position! Thank you for the advice

Thank you! We don’t need loans for NYU but yeah, definitely very expensive.

I was admitted to Rose Hill. A classic campus isn’t important to me haha I care more about the surrounding area. Not sure about the housing situation in Fordham, I’ll need to do more research on that. I don’t particularly like New Brunswick and the bus-ing situation, but I’ve heard the Honors College dorms are nice.

I’m checking out Fordham tomorrow and Rutgers in two weeks! Thank you for all of your advice.

Fordham Rose Hill has some lovely dorms (S graduated from Gabelli).
