Please Help--U of R, Brandeis, BU, or GWU

I’m planning on studying psychology, and I’m trying to decide between these school. I like U of R and Brandeis a lot, but GWU offered me more money than all of them. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Collegegirl12345, I majored in Psychology as an undergraduate so I hope I can provide a good perspective. My favorite class was a graduate level seminar on Achievement Motivation in which I wrote a paper on cooperation in sports as it relates to fear of failure and the need for achievement. One of my friends compiled data on a project about color and achievement. Professor Elliott found that people who are primed with the color red will be less likely to achieve on an exam. Recently, Elliott made national news when he discovered that men are more attracted to women who wear red.

As a Senior, you could also take a course on Humanistic Psychology in which you counsel other students in the classroom. The U of R has been influenced by Carl Rogers, a famous psychologist who taught briefly at UR in the 1970s. Although you may not know him, his work on client-centered therapy has shaped much of present-day therapeutic techniques.

The bottom line is that you will get tremendous opportunities to do graduate level work as an undergraduate at Rochester, something that might not be the case at other places.

Let me know if you’d like to get in touch with one of our Professors. I can set something up.

My advice is to first, and foremost, carefully weigh your economic situation before looking at things like what famous professors teach at a particular school.

If you will be accumulating large amounts of debt as a result of undergraduate education, it might not be worth it - especially since your alternative school choices all have fine psychology departments.

If the financial package difference between UR and GWU is tolerable - however you define tolerable - then I definitely recommend UR.

UR has a nicely-funded, respectable psychology department. Judging from the 5 psychology classes I took, professors are nice, competent, and, in general, very caring individuals. I can personally attest to the awesomeness of Prof. Elliot - he is one of the best professors I’ve had. His courses are always full!

Closely paralleling the psychology department are the departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Neuroscience. These two are consistently recognized as among the top in the country. So, if you are interested in courses that deal with more of the how-it-works on molecular/neural systems levels questions, those options are all on the table as well.

Hope this helps.

I would go with U of R or GWU.

I’m from Boston and I wouldn’t want to go to BU. It has a very large student body and the campus is spread out across like four T stops. Especially since your major is so popular, you’d get more individualized attn at U of R.
