Please help! Very worried student!

I am a junior in high school
Top 25% of my class
3.47 gpa unweighted…i did get a D soph year in chemistry…not my strong side but most of my other grades are As and Bs, especially in AP and GT (gifted and talented) classes
^ i am terrified that this grade will destroy me and ultimately ruin my chances of getting into my top colleges
Taking all available APs besides foreign languages
National Technical Honors Society
Varsity Field Hockey since freshman year (school team and winter rec league)
Key Club freshman-junior year
SADD vice president
The Invisible Children’s Club (a club to raise money and awareness for children in Africa who have been kidnapped into Joseph Kony’s army)
Lots of community service ( over 400 hours and counting)
Active in volunteering in my community
Enrolled in a magnet multimedia program in my school that required special admission in order to be accepted into (we learn photoshop,dreamweaver,flash,illustrator,e.t.c…)
Impressively computer-savvy
1910 SAT first try
Capable of impressive letters of recommendation
Possible internship at a large scale computer company
Volunteer at an elementary school for peer helping and teachers assistant
CIT (counselor in training) for 7 weeks at an overnight camp
Part time job at a gym (greeting, swiping gym cards, washing towels… mostly for extra money but still a good experience of working for a paycheck and learning the values of a workplace)

I am interested in pursuing my multimedia career. I am very good at it and very creative and excellent with computers. I want to major in multimedia studies, graphic design and computer engineering…I am in love with VT and everything that it has to offer me, does anyone think I have a shot? I know I’m not the best candidate, especially because I am out of state (MD)

SAT scores at the upper end of Universtiy of Vermont’s range will help to compensate for one low grade and a grade point that’s lower than some applicants. Aim for 1300 math + verbal (which sounds like it’s possible for you if you don’t have that already.

I agree, think you do have a good shot at U. Vermont. I also just want to mention that the D may be able to be removed. We’re in VA and our public school system does allow HS kids to retake courses and then if you earn a higher grade, that D can be taken off your transcript. Definitely talk to your guidance counselor and see if there is any “loop hole” for you to get this grade removed. It would definitely be worth it to retake --see if it’s offered this summer and fit it into your schedule no matter what. You may be able to retake at a community college even and have it accepted as a HS credit (similar to Dual enrollement). You have a lot of options with that resume- so keep it up!

thank you so much for all of the advice i well definitely do whatever i can… when i wrote vt i meant virginia tech i apologize for not making that clear that was my fault

That GPA will be tough for Va Tech. Only 11% attended with that or worse. Your SATs are near the 75%ile which should help. All the other things except GPA, scores and class rigor are only considered.

honestly, grades DO matter but they are not the ONLY thing, and from what you are involved in, after making your resume look nice, you have a very good chance of getting in the Uni.V Keep up your grades though

i certainly think you have a chance at VT, as in va tech. yes, grades matter, but you have them, except the chem. do you have any idea what your grades would be weighted? also, “all APs except languages” is a good fit for VT as they are not terribly concerned with language. how and what were your other science classes? i believe you said you’re from MD and they have a reputation for strong secondary schools. stop being “terrfied” and breathe :)

happycollegemom- thank you very much for your advice. I am not sure of my weighted gpa i havent checked recently but it is relatively high thanks to the multiple AP, honors, and GT classes i have taken. The other sciences i have taken are biology and anatomy and physiology, both of which i have gotten Bs in.
