Please help with college selection

I’m having a lot of trouble choosing between colleges. I got accepted into UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and Cal Poly SLO. I’ve boiled it down to three: Berkeley, San Diego and Cal Poly because of their Biological Sciences programs. The reason why I don’t want to go to Berkeley is because I would have to live at home (and I really want to move out), San Diego which is far, but I also hear that Cal Poly has a great Bio program (plus its far).

Is Berkeley worth staying at home for? My parents and I fight all the time and I want to take a break from that. I also have two much younger siblings and I don’t know if I could handle my studies in that kind of situation. How does Berkeley fare to San Diego’s and Cal Poly?

I would very much appreciate your insight.

I would go to UCSD. It is a great school w/ great program in your major. Althogh UCB is more prestigious, I understand your desire to get away from home and you should do so, since you want. College is supposed to be one of the best times of your life, and imagine yourself living at home with your parents for 4 years of this amazing time…not good. (esp. since you fight w/ them a lot). Go to UCSD, live in dorm, make new friends and enjoy your social life. It is part of the growing up process in becoming independent and forming your academic/social life by yourself. Last year, when i was making college choices, i decided that I would go to college far away from home no matter what for similar reasons and I have been doing great. Also, my relationship between me and my parents actually got better than before. GL.

Berkeley bio is excellent. UCSD is equally excellent. Go to UCSD. Good luck!
