I took SAT a year ago during the first semester of my junior year and did horribly on it. My highest score on ACT is 31. And that is the score I submitted to the colleges. However, my SAT score goes automatically on my transcript. So the colleges could see how bad I did a year ago. I have great GPA and ECs, but I got deferred from Lafayette and case western. Do you think it’s because of the SAT score? I thought colleges only look at the highest score. And even if they do look at my SAT score, they should see a huge improvement because a 31 on ACT equals 2100s on the SAT.

Both of those schools are pretty selective. Check out their Common Data Sets, section C to see how you stack up against last year’s admits.
The good news is that they didn’t deny you. Hopefully you applied to some other schools where your odds are better?

No, I don’t think it’s because of your SAT score. You presumably reported your ACT as your official score and that is what they used. They have no reason to use a lower score that wasn’t officially reported by you.
