I just got a call from my admissions counselor congratulating me. The personal call was a very nice touch.

gabby, DD got a call also. Nice touch! Are you going to an honors weekend coming up? DD and I are going to the March date. She is more excited than ever. Congrats to you.

Spring162 - Thank you! Congratulations to you and your daughter also! Yes, my mom and I are going to honors weekend in March. I know just how’s your daughter is feeling, I’m counting the days. Is your daughter staying overnight?

I am glad to hear that calls are being made. They didn’t do that last year, at least not to my D. I agree it is the classy thing to do for such an important achievement.

Gabby, yes she is staying overnight. I take it you are also? We are flying in on Saturday what about you? We are at the Best Western. I am hoping the overnight goes well. I have heard college kids say the overnight was very important in swaying them one way or the other. For myself and my checkbook, I am hoping it sways her the right way!!! LOL

Yes I am. We are flying in on Friday night. We’re staying at the Maison Dupuy in the French Quarter. I’m really hoping it goes well also since I submitted my deposit the day I got the notification. haha

Gabby, I am sure it will be great. Looking forward to the nice weather that fallenchemist has promised us LOL! Keep an eye out for us, we will be the pasty white people from the midwest!!!

The weather will be splendid. Have a great time!

At the moment, we are in the midst of a pretty bad nor’easter, so anything over 31 degrees and snowy will be wonderful. You should keep an eye out for us also, the two pasty ladies from New Jersey. :)

OK, gabby you got me on the weather. I feel sorry for all you easterners. I am hoping they have some parents programs or I will be looking for another lone parent to sight see with. Much more fun and interesting in a group. I know my DD is looking forward to some excellent local food. That is why we are going a litttle early. The girl loves to eat!

That would be great if they had something for the parents. Both times we went to New Orleans we did a lot of site seeing, but we never really explored uptown/garden district. So that is our plan for Saturday, and, of course, eating as we go.

Walking through the Garden District is wonderful, and you might also want to try walking from where the streetcar lets you off at Gibson Hall and go through Audubon Park. When you hit the zoo you will be at Magazine street, and you can walk (and walk and walk) towards downtown and see what is offered along there. When you finally tire of walking you can cut back over to St. Charles and either head to your hotel on the streetcar or go the other way and go back to campus. You will also see some of the Garden district that way along Magazine and as you cross back to St. Charles on Napoleon or Louisiana or Jackson or any number of other streets. Almost all streets go through from St. Charles to Magazine as you can see from this map. http://www.neworleansonline.com/assets/pdfs/maps/GardenDistrictMap.pdf

Also, I know they have parents programs but I didn’t do those myself, since they were designed more for people less familiar with the school and city. Surely they have sent a schedule by now?? Well in any case, shouldn’t be hard to find people to do stuff with. We met people there and at orientation that we stay in touch with and planned dinners with during move-in and parents weekend. So either way it will be great. Have a blast!

Fallenchemist - great minds think alike. haha Our plan is to start downtown (that’s where our hotel is) and walk all the way up magazine until we hit Audubon. There is a St. Patricks Day parade on magazine, so we’re hoping to time it right so we can catch it. Like Spring162’s daughter, I love to eat. Is there any restaurants you can recommend for a lunch stop (or two)? haha

Now that is a long walk! You do realize that is about 6 miles, right? Just making sure.

As far as restaurants on Magazine, there are a number of good lunch places, but frankly the area has changed enough that I think others can probably give better info. Maybe Benetode or some current students can help. In the meantime, I’ll ask my D and check with some others also. When she and I did that same walk (well, the walk I described anyway, I wasn’t up for 6 miles! 3 was fine with me), we stopped at two places but I couldn’t tell you their names if my life depended on it. They were great though. One was a bakery, and positively sinful.

Yes, we know it’s 6 miles, we are pretty big walkers. We are planning on stopping by Juan’s Flying Burrito, one of our favorites, even if it’s for a snack. Thanks, once again, for your help!

Did anyone else apply for the tuition exchange scholarship? We called financial aid and they said they send out letters on monday (march 1st).

Congrats to everyone who applied and was awarded the DHS - go job! My D has several friends who’ve rec’d “no” letters. My D hasn’t received one. Did everyone receive a “no” letter who wasn’t awarded the DHS? Why do you think some students would get a letter and some would not?

I have one theory (emphasis on theory). I know that they know which students have applied for both the Community Service Scholarship and the DHS. If that student does not win the DHS, the materials are forwarded to the CSS selection committee. So they may wait with those students instead of sending a letter out yet. Something like that. Yes/no?

That sounds like a good theory, but if the CSS was a separate application, my D didn’t apply. She only applied to DHS, Hainklel and Legislative. The only reason I’m asking is my daughter wants closure. lol

rachmom - maybe your daughter should call her admissions counselor.
