Please Mr. UPS man, come our way!!!

I’ve been lurking on this site for some time now, but I thought I’d let you guys know I JUST GOT THE DEAN’S ENVELOPE BY UPS TODAY! This site has been most informative and encouraging, and I thought I’d share the good news.

VaeVictis and reparker - really excellent. Congrats.

So of those on here who have won so far, how many have Tulane as their #1? Nothing to be shy about if it isn’t. Last year only about 1/3 of the winners matriculated at Tulane, and the year before it was about 44% or something like that. We understand that because you are so talented, you get similar offers from other great schools. I know at least 3 last year that won and also got similar offers from Wash U and other more highly ranked schools and chose those. So let us know what you are thinking.

As you know Fallenchemist, Tulane has been my first choice. Although I applied at more highly ranked schools, Tulane is where I want to be. I sent in my deposit yesterday!

fallen, My daughter did get the award and Tulane is absolutely her first choice. I’ve never seen her want anything so much. We still aren’t sure we’re going to be able to swing it financially. The DHS made it possible but not a sure thing. We’ve completed the FAFSA and CSS Profile but I’m hoping for the best but not expecting much. Her dad and I are divorced and he completed the NCP. If they count his income, we probably won’t qualify.

btw, I just discovered this site (while my daughter was obsessing over the DHS mail out) and enjoy your posts.

Just to add about the financial aspect of Tulane, the “other fees” were shocking to me compared to other schools. $3,384 for the current school year compared to $300 for Rhodes, Sewanee, Hendrix and $1700 for University of AR. That is what pushed us over the edge. I had taken into account room & board and books, of course, but that extra $3,000 surprised me.

mamaxyz-
Did the calculation of the extra fees include the very expensive health insurance that you dont need and can delete fromt he bill when you provide proof of current insurance?
I dont remember the ancillary fees 9which include estimated mealplan, dorm cost, mandatory student activity fees, etc) to be very different between my 2 sons school, and thery certainly werent only $300!! Mealplan and dorm costs alone will be a fes grand.

I wasn’t including room and board in “other” fees - that would be quite the bargain!

The website shows the total for “Tuition and Fees” as $40,584. That is broken down into $37,200 and “Other” fees of $3,384. It is my understanding that these are required fees for all students.

From the website:
Academic Support Fees - $2,400 - The University fee entitles a student to use the supplementary services of the university library and the language and science laboratories. It also covers certain computer services and data and voice hookups, the Educational Resources and Counseling Center and other academic support services.

Student Activity and Reily Recreation Fee - $440 - The student body at Tulane assesses itself a Student Activity fee to support its activities. The Student Activity fee entitles students to participate in or attend supported activities, readership of a weekly student newspaper, and admission to many intercollegiate athletic contests, movies and lectures. Students are also assessed for membership to the Reily Recreation Center.

Student Health Fee - $544 - The Student Health fee provides all students on all Tulane campuses with primary care at the Student Health Center. It also contributes to health education programs, drug and alcohol counseling and the Tulane Emergency Service.

All schools have fees in addition to the tuition, but these are the highest I’ve seen. If I’m misunderstanding something, I would be tickled to death.

I had been so focused on whether my daughter might GET DHS that I did not focus on what it covers. I guess what you are saying is that DHS covers only the $37,200 (or whatever it might rise to next year) tuition component. In addition, there are fees, room, and board. I totally agree that over $3,000 in fees sounds high. You caused me to pull the statements for my other two daughters. One has only a “General Fee” of $515 in addition to room, board and tuition. The other has a “Student Life” fee of $623 plus a mandatory Health Services fee of $387 for a total of $1010. Both are a far cry from $3,000.

Mamaxyzbear,
Is your dau an NMF? Don’t forget, if you list Tulane as your top choice, she’ll get an automatic $2K/yr NMS.
Here is a list of the school fees http://pandora.tcs.tulane.edu/acctrec/pdfs/TULANE_TUITION_FEES_ROOM_BOARD_09-10_web.pdf</a> With the 2 scholarships, our out of pocket expenses to the school (not counting books, transportation, ridiculous stupid dorm repair charges-- those do fry my cookies!) is about 12K/yr. We find that quite reasonable. I can’t speak to the way other schools break out their tuition/room/board/other fees other than as I mentioned above. My older son’s junk fees were pretty much in line with TU’s, but it looks like those numbers can vary widely across schools.

Unfortunately, she didn’t make NMF so we don’t get that $2000.

jym626 - when you say “2 scholarships,” do you mean NMF & DHS? Your post is informative and I want to see if it applies to my daughter’s situation. Thanks!

I realize this applies to very few people, but Louisiana residents have the possibility of $5000 for the valedictorian scholarship and $3750 for TOPS. Together with $2000 for NMS, this leaves us only $1,250 short of jym’s $12000 bill!! So even with the fees, I sure can’t complain if my daughter can get a Tulane education for $1250.

That would be wonderful for you! Good luck.

Yes, rachmom. The DHS pays full tuition, and it comes right off the bill as “anticipated scholarship” each semester. The NMS is an additional $1000 off each semester. However, the money sometimes comes at a snails pace (it is a school sponsored NMS, but somehow there is a lag between something that is sent from NM - not sure how that works). So sometimes we have to pay the $1000 in order to avoid the late fee, but then the $1000 arrives (or the check is prepared) at the FA office, and they send him an email telling him to come get it (or I have bugged him to pester the FA office and ask when it will be ready).

DS then picks up the $1000 ck and carries it over to the Accounts Receivable office and its posted to his account. So some semesters there has been a credit, which we let roll to the next semester. This semester I want the refund, but I havent felt comfortable setting up a link between TU’s acc rec office and my checking account, so DS has to do something he hasnt yet gotten around to for us to get the refund. Worst case scenario, it applies as a credit to next year’s first semester tuition. Keep in mind there are often other ancillary things you may get billed for (eg if your kid buys something at the college store and charges it to your account, your child loses their ID and has to get a new one made-- that costs $20–ask me how I know; sometimes there are some extra science lab fees, etc) so the credit on the account gets applied to those little charges.

BTW, the lag of the NMS money seems universal. We had the same issue at older s’s college. It isnt just a TU thing. Bottom line, the MNS is a second, additional $2K scholarship that is combined with the DHS. Sweet deal.

csshsm,
Whoa!! Wonderful!! You get an education for $1250?? Add another ZERO to that to compare to our $12,000 annual bill.

Thanks again for the info jym626!

Happy to help. Is your dau a NMF rachmom? Is she definitely coming to Tulane?

she is not a nmf. She was awarded $22k merit scholarship, (honors program) and will get the highest TOPS. Do you have any idea when the Legislative or Heinkel (?) scholarships will be awarded? We can still hope for those!

We live in LA and Tulane would be perfect!

Sorry- not sure when they are announced. Did your d apply for the Hainkel?

She did, as well as the legislative scholarship. We will probably still send her since it really is her first choice and it would keep her closer to home. She has applied to three east coast colleges who say they will send decision letters by April 1 (of all days!) We may wait to send in her deposit until we hear from them.
