<p>My essay was 1,200 words when I submitted it (edited down from over 1,400) and I got in ED to Cornell. Try to cut it down as much as you can, but when you reach a point where important content would be lost if anything else was removed, stop. I think it is more important to have a really good essay that is a bit over what is recommended than a short essay that is missing something.</p>
