I wrote two SAT essays consecutively, and I wrote the first essay using Kaplan’s method and the second one using my own method–no planning and rushing directly to writing. THank you a lot for rating!

Essay written in 22:34 minutes using Kaplan’s method:

The prompt: what is your view on individual responsibility in which many people could have reacted?

Every individual has a personal responsibility to correct a perceived wrong. However, often times, many individuals shirk their responsibilities, and consequently, others suffer. For example, my mother and I shirked our responsibilities to discipline me, and many countries did not defend Jews from Germany’s persecution.

My mother saw me fail my classes, yet she did not admonish me for attaining bad grades. She believed that I would eventually “grow up,” and get better grades. Her behavior toward me was shaped by the false notion that all kids eventually matured, and came to self-discipline themselves. However, unlike she had hoped, I did not self-discipline myself to get good grades.

Relatedly, I too expected someone else to discipline me. I expected my teachers to force me to get better grades. Like a helpless bird that closes its eyes when an eagle approaches, I ignored my problem, which was my bad educational performance. And because of my failure to address the issue, I suffered.

Incidentally, many countries gave in to the mob mentality during WW2, and they ignored Jews’ pleas for help. These countries were afraid to fight Germany and let Jews suffer. Furthermore, to rationalize their quiescence, they falsely claimed that Jews deserved persecution because of purported claims by anti-Semitists. Those countries had a personal responsibility to save Jews, but they did not uphold it. Consequently, they paved way for themselves to be abused by the Germans.

When individuals or countries deny to uphold their personal responsibilities to address a wrong or wrong doing, they are augmenting the wrong. And because of their inactivity, righteousness ebbs and injustice and inequality prevail.

Essay written with my own method in 24:45 minutes:

The prompt: Does every achievement bring with it new challenges?

Considering that achievements present solutions to existing problems, it is ironic that with every achievement, new problems arise. Without the advent of nuclear bombs many complex, modern researches could not be done. And if modern armaments were not created, many tyrants would dictate our lives. Therefore, every achievement presents solutions to existing problems, but also introduces other problems.

Nuclear technology is unequivocally the highest energy-yielding source based on substance mass. Nuclear reactors span many highlands in every first-world country. Furthermore, nuclear energy is the only viable solution to many of our current energy limitations, such as the energy required for space travel and research facilities. However, the advent of nuclear energy, a propitious resource, was facilitated by people with unscrupulous intentions. Their intent was to create a weapon that would prove their dominance in war. The creation of the nuclear bomb led to utilitarian uses of nuclear energy. However, nuclear energy also introduced ethical problems. Some current problems that arose because of nuclear energy are who dictates who can use nuclear energy, who can transform reactors into bombs, and who should inspect nuclear activities of self-governing entities?

Like the nuclear technology, modern armaments are also controversial. Some people argue that without continued research in military technology, democratic nations will succumb to dictators because the dictators will use advanced weapons. However, as the democratic nations develop ever-advancing weapons, chances increase that weapons may proliferate to insidious groups with unscrupulous intentions. For example, many terrorists use World War 2 weapons to fight democracies. Their weapon of choice is the AK 47 that was created to fend off German invasion in Russia. The weapon was created to solve the problem that was encroaching invasion of a ruthless dictator. However, after many years of its creation, the weapon is used by terrorists and criminals to cause mayhem and spread fear. The weapon solved one problem, but created many others, such as empowerment of terrorists and criminals, and advancement of fear and terror.

As a famous scientist Glenn Henriech once said “You may not take a solution out of a problem, but you can take a problem out of a solution.” Every advancement solves problems, but also introduces many problems. However, if humans can solve such dominating problems as rules of powerful dictators and their invasions, then they can face almost anything.
