Here we go. I will start off with saying that I am a HS sophomore. I have two passions - learning languages (and the culture of the people who speak that language) and traveling. When looking through colleges, there were several that seemed to fit my wants and needs. Harvard and NYU stood out the most to me. Harvard would be my top choice, but in a realist world, I need to flesh out other options. I am not saying that it would be crazy if I made it into Harvard, I just don’t want to get my hopes up. I feel like I could get into Columbia college in NY, but when I have looked over their website, I haven’t felt like I would belong there. NYU is different, I feel like I could fit in there. There is only one problem with this, NYU isn’t NEAR as selective. After my undergrad BA, I want to go to NYU, Harvard, Yale, or Cambridge Law School. Will I be able to do this if I go to an undergraduate college such as that of NYU’s?

Now for the “Is this plan OK” part. Based on my AP classes, I will only need to take 5 1-semester courses of basics at NYU. This will allow me to finish my degree (Russian Language and Culture) and take 3 advanced Spanish-language courses(highest they have). That leaves me two years of undergrad to add another major or minor. (Note: all of that was for only taking 4 classes per semester) I want to study abroad in Madrid for a semester, which won’t be an issue with all of that time, but that still leaves 12 one-semester courses (1.5 semesters, taking 4/semester). I want to take a philosophical logic course and a sociology elective, but that still leaves ten. At NYU, 9 courses are generally required for a major. So right now in this plan, I have a major in Russian Studies, and am perfectly fluent in Spanish (I am highly conversational in Spanish right right now, as a sophomore). My dream job is working for Allen and Overy at their Madrid, London, or NYC office, while occasionally traveling to their Russian office/advising Russian clients from my home office. (Corporate law is what I am thinking right now)

Anyway, that only puts me being fluent in 3 languages (English, Russian, and Spanish) before law school. I feel like I should add another one. I pick up languages very quickly. The summer before my freshman year, I picked up basic Mandarin to talk to people online when I was bored. I have lost most of it now, but could easily re-pick it up. You can’t tell I am a nerd at aaaall in this post, can you? For this reason, I was thinking about taking a language that had “Intensive” courses, which do two semesters of a language in one. Italian? French? I would love to do a language exchange with Columbia (which NYU offers) to study Catalan through Intermediate II. I would want to learn Italian, French and Catalan for personal reasons, but only Catalan seems to benefit me professionally. Am I completely wrong here? (Please tell me if I am, that is why I am posting here. I am a sophomore in high school. Although smart for my age, I am still ignorant) So let’s say I decided to take the 4 Catalan courses (intensive courses are not offered, sadly), this would still leave six courses. Can you guys tell me if this plan is any good? Is this good enough to get into a T10 law school? FYI, all of these courses are electives to me except for the 5 basics. This is what I am passionate about so keeping a 4.0 wouldn’t be difficult at all. If I kept a 4.0 at NYU doing all of this and then 6 electives of my choice, plus various electives while studying abroad in Spain, is there any chance of me getting into a T10 law school?

Finally, for my dream career, what languages would you recommend the study of besides Russian, Spanish, and Catalan? Also, I have read extensively on the cultures of the people speaking these languages already so I DO know that I like learning about them. I am not that HS student that thinks they want to be a doctor but failed Freshman bio and hasn’t taken a single anatomy or chemistry class, haha.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, it really means a lot.
