Our checkin went very smoothly, except the we didn’t get the mask and other trinkets we were supposed to get. Tried to pick on up at Barnes & Noble, but that’s only for non-dorm folks. She’ll figure it out eventually. She’s got 10 KN95 masks and 50 surgical masks, so it’s no big deal.
I saw pretty good mask compliance, although they obviously have no enforcement of that…or anything else. Anybody who wants can go into the dorms whenever they want, whether or not they are masked.
Parking was not enforced during move-in, but I talked to a UCF police officer and he said normally parking is very aggressively enforced. So if you visit, be sure to get a parking pass and be sure you understand where you can and cannot park – because they WILL write you a ticket. Parking is NOT enforced by the police – it’s a special team of non-sworn folks and parking enforcement is all they do. That should tell you something!
Oh, and covid tests were coming back same day, or next day. You have to go back and check in on the registrations site. Everybody I talked to was negative.
Our daughter also went to “The Knighting,” which is the special official UCF welcome thing.
It was awful. If you were going to design the worst possible first impression, this would be it.
Nothing but a bunch of academic blowhards talking about what an “unprecedented” year 2020 was – like they’re the only people on the planet wise enough to notice.
Really boring, and apparently a lot of people left during the blah, blah, blah. Our daughter went with her roommates, and they all said they couldn’t wait for it to end.
The mask they gave D18 was way too big- she could never wear it! Glad all the kids are moved in. D18 had 1 in person class today- no one thinks it will last long.
We also had a smooth move-in experience last Friday. My son made it to the Rosen shuttle and his in person class on Tues and then back to campus for his afternoon in person English class (he’ll be in person Tu and on zoom Thu). He also expects to be shut down soon so he was very happy he got to those classes.
He said all kids are wearing masks in his classes and on shuttle. Walking around campus he said it is about 65 on/ 35 off.
My daughter and I walked from the Towers over to Washington Center next to the Library on Sunday, and we were around campus all day Saturday and until 2 PM on Sunday.
Almost everyone I saw was wearing masks, except for a handful of oblivious folks at Tower 4. They were going into and out of the building without masks, and there was obviously zero enforcement.
That said, the vast majority of the people in the dorm and surrounding areas were masked.
@vannevka - great news about people wearing masks on the shuttle. That was a concern of D18- she rarely takes it, but she wondered if people would be good about it. D18’s in person class ran long and she had to run back to her room so she could get on a zoom call! She was late- luckily the professor was very chill about it.
