PERSONAL STATEMENT- Prompt 2
Thanksgiving is known as the holiday of giving thanks for all that you have and sitting down to a feast with those close to you. Most spend time with their family and friends, but there are those who aren’t as fortunate and spend it alone or don’t celebrate whatsoever. Never did I think about spending a Thanksgiving alone or not having a celebration of any kind. Not once did I take a moment to think of others who weren’t able to enjoy this day the way I was able to until I volunteered to help serve a Thanksgiving dinner to the community with Key Club, a community-service organization I have been a member of. From this experience, I was able to see a side of the holiday I had never known. Families who weren’t able to have a meal of their own gathered here to celebrate. Regardless of their situation, every family appeared happy and seemed to enjoy themselves.
After that day a change occurred in me; I viewed the world in a different perspective. I had seen others who were suffering and were less fortunate than I and realized that I should be grateful I was able to go home that day and enjoy the holiday with my family. I came to understand the meaning behind the saying “A grateful heart is a beginning of greatness”.
It is easy for people to forget that they could be worse off than they are and become oblivious to what they do have. Personally, I have recognized the value in everything I own and am offered. Being appreciative has always been an attribute of mine that’s driven me to help others, not only myself. My experience that Thanksgiving further deepened my gratitude for what I have in life and for what I am able to encounter in it.

I would steer away from talking about a service project exclusively. It is a very popular subject especially when it involves soup kitchen type environments. Try to steer away from the cliche!
