Prompt 2
Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

There is something good to be said for holding firm opinions, whether in politics, art, business, or daily life. A person who is deeply committed to a certain position on a film, a political candidate, or an idea may have thought long and hard before reaching that position. But too often such opinions are not based on careful thought and may be so rigidly held that those who express them do not consider other viewpoints or positions.

Assignment: Are firmly held opinions reasonable? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Essay
I believe that held opinions should be consistent, well-supported and unbiased. I believe that consistency is most important when withholding a firm opinion. For instance, a female who is pro-life should be truly anti-abortion. If she gets pregnant, no matter what case, she must continue the pregnancy. If she honestly believes that pro-choice is a better position than pro-life, then she must change her position to the former. If she fails to stay consistent by alternating positions constantly, her held opinion is unreasonable.

Held opinions must, also, be well-supported and unbiased. One cannot have a firmly held position if it was supported by misleading, tainted or untrue information. This information must be unbiased so that other supporters of the same opinion would not be conditioned to become close-minded when dealing with matters of this opinion.
Yes, I do truly believe that held opinions are reasonable. However, I also believe that opinions based on biased claims or false information are proper opinions. And yes, I believe that everyone is entitled to other opinions but it is the individual’s responsibility that that information is consistent well-supported and unbiased.
