Prompt: Should people take more responsability for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general?

It is the government’s duty to protect its citizens and ensure that prosperity and security prevail. In times of crisis, the government’s responsability is even more crucial. The 2010 earthquake in Japan illustrates just how important the government’s involvement is.

Three years ago, a devastating earthquake robbed countless Japanese of their belongings, and for the less fortunate, even their lives. The population was completely taken aback by the sudden disaster and had neither the resources nor the power to cope. The government then stepped in. By investing money in public works projects and distributing supplies to the victims, the Japanese government helped its people get back on their feet.

The government made good use of its abundant resources and organization skills. It went as far as creating new jobs and giving social welfare to victims of the earthquake. Obviously, individuals would not have been able to pour in as much money and effort in times like these. It indeed takes enormous quantities of resources to actually make a difference, things that solely a government can have.

In retrospect, times of crisis cannot be handled by individuals. Rather, these situations require large scale government involvement, resources and effort. Such qualities were responsibly put to use by the Japanese government back in 2010.
