If you see folks handing out flags and symbolic poppies this Memorial Day, please take a moment to be thankful and make a donation - support your veterans.
I’m reading this while getting ready to go shopping, and the post convinced me to put a handful of change in my pocket, in case I see someone with poppies.
Thank you, @rosered55 . I am sitting out in front of a supermarket helping my DH collect donations and handing out flags and poppies. 100% goes to the veterans and their support services. Thank you for donation!
Many people are remarkably kind and generous.
Thank you, jym and huge thanks to all veterans.
We are hot and tired, but have $1150 to give back to the veterans for today’s work. Two more days to go. Thank you, kind-hearted people. One woman tearfully said she used to sit out with her grandfather when she was a kid, giving poppies out for donations. Sweet.
If I hadn’t gotten red, the dark grey was second choice.
I attended a very interesting presentation called “Theater of War.” You can read about it at http://theaterofwar.com/projects/theater-of-war/overview There are readings of extracts from 2 ancient Greek plays about the Trojan war with explanations. Then a panel of veterans leads a discussion among the vets, spouses, and community members about how the play relates to their personal experiences of war. It may sound hokey, but live it was very informative and moving. If you have a chance to see it, I recommend it. The cast rotates, but they are all seasoned and usually well-known professional actors.
@jym626 Your last post probably was meant for the Tesla thread.
^^^ I second the recommendation to see a Theater of War presentation, if you have a chance to do so. I saw it a few years ago and Paul Giamati was one of the actors. He left immediately after the performance and didn’t stay for the discussion. He was amazing.
One of the actors, who was a veteran (Iraq, led the discussion. There were a few Vietnam veterans in the audience who participated in the discussion afterwards. I think the discussion would have been more informative had there been more veterans in attendance. This performance was part of a yearly conference that brings in people who are considered visionaries in various fields (www.nantucketproject.com).
Yup. Wrong thread
