I don’t like the look of completely bare kitchen counters. Too sterile. I have a pretty ceramic vase I keep my most used utensils in (wooden spoons, ladle, spatial,) my salt tubes, vinegar & olive oil bottles, and my prep knives. Also, my toaster oven and coffee marker. These are all right next to my stove (on both sides) so plenty of open counter space to prep food on.
I have a big draw that all the other zillion utensils go in.
@1214mom - once a week for cleaning bathrooms and changing sheets. I love the feel of clean sheets!!!
Funny story - I had seen this trick on CC. Unbeknownst to him, when we helped Ds move into college his freshman year, I put two $20 bills under the fitted sheet (they were black/red/gray stripe, so you couldn’t see them) near the foot of the bed. So, the first time he changed his sheets, he would find them. I had encouraged him to make sure he washed his sheets fairly often (he did, at least, heed my advice on washing the pillowcase weekly). Several of our friends and family members knew I had done this, and it became funnier and funnier the longer he went without changing the sheets. Everyone would ask, “Has Ds found the sheet money yet?” I’d ask Ds every week during our weekly phone conversations, too. Finally, right before Thanksgivng (at least he’s on a quarter system and hadn’t started school until the third week of September), I received a text telling me he’d found the money!
We have pull down spice rack in the upper cabinet to the right of the stove. We put the crock pot in a two drawerpull out wire organizer in the cabinet below the counter where we use it. I would love to have nearly nothing on the counter tops but the family is not cooperating. A chrome utility “crock” from Ikea holds the most used cooking utensils and the rest are in another drawer inside a lower cabinet.
I do have a rectangular clear acrylic box from the Container Store (probably a refrig door container) that I use to hold utensils. 10x4x6 high. Attractive. The shape means less projection into the counter workspace than a wider round jar. Rather than deep, there’s a wide drawer for knives, cooking tools, and misc.
I also had a 27" bottom cabinet converted to 3 pull out shelves, for pots, lids, bakeware, plus some small gizmos. My kitchen is small, nowhere near enough linear storage space.
I have a mile worth of counter length… so I keep some of the things on the counter: fruit basket, knife block, Breville toaster and kettle, KitchenAid mixer, and my favorite Instapot. Also, there is a “tropical garden” of an orchid, miniature plumeria, and some bromeliad in the corner window. Other than that, all stuff goes into the drawers and cabinets.
My family thought I was crazy, but I put command hooks on the inside of some of my kitchen closet doors and hang those big utensils on them (the big ladle, etc.) They do swing around when I open the doors but it basically works.
I have two big crocks for utensils, plus a 3" deep drawer next to the stove. Still not enough room! Would love a drawer for lids and a separate drawer for pots. The undercounter storage is mostly open space and noone else helps to keep it organized. Oh, for a reno…the changes I would make!
I made one length of counter an extra six inches deep so I could keep more out on the counters and still have plenty of work space. We use multilple mixing spoons, spatulas, pancake turners, whisks, and measuring spoons every day. I have them in beer steins on the counter. Also on the counter - kitchen aid mixer, knife sharpener, coffee maker and grinder, toaster, compost bucket and lazy susan with salt, pepper and olive oil and basalmic vinegar, butter dish and some other stuff. My kitchen looks like someone cooks in it. That’s okay with me.
I love kitchen drawers and much prefer them to cabinets. I have many and would add even more to my next kitchen. My utensils go in a long drawer, none left out on the counter. Measuring cups/spoons are in a separate drawer.
I watched the one hour and thirty-five minute speed cleaning video on YouTube today. It was helpful to me. I particularly liked his idea of the apron which carried around most supplies, using the toothbrush and whisk broom/brush, and the once-around-the-room concept. I need to order his spring cleaning book about deep cleaning to get a sense of what that looks like and how often it should be done.
I think we probably purchased the wrong vacuum since it doesn’t have attachments, so that will likely need to be changed. I also need to Google or look on YouTube for videos on how to clean floor tile grout and hard water/mineral spots. I am feeling better about my ability to do this and feel I haven’t necessarily been doing it “wrong.” My goal will be to work in efficiency. We’ll see how things go once we are actually in our Florida condo and Dh has retired.
Here is why I like cabinets. A single door and ONE knob with a set of pull-out shelves inside is more aesthetically pleasing than a bank of drawers/handles. And please don’t tell me that knobless doors are the way to go.
In all the kitchens which I’ve remodeled, everything below the counters are drawers. With drawers, I just pull them out, with cabinets, I have to open(and wide enough) then pull shelves out. Too inefficient.
I don’t have any upper cabinets in my kitchen; I have a pantry off the kitchen that has floor to ceiling recessed cabinet. There are drawers under thecounters/island in the kitchen.
