Ok, a question about putting plates on open shelves: don’t you worry they’d get dusty or dirty or a summer bug might land on them? (Hmm, I’ve never worried about utensils. )
I can’t live in a house that is not spotless, like steam-cleaned weekly top to bottom with zero clutter. DH and I have a method for keeping it this way (or he’d have me living in squalor as I posted on another thread) that does not overly intrude on our lives. I give the guy credit; he knew this about me when he married me and he’s still here. My basic philosophy is that everything has a place and nothing is allowed to be out of its place when not in use. All laundry (me) and the kitchen (him) get done on Wednesday. The remainder we split on Thursday. Each week, we complete one task that is not done weekly (polish cabinets, caulk windows, touch-up wall paint, wash windows, replace air filters, wash the garage floor, etc.). The rest of the week, we just enjoy our clean/organized house and entertain our friends.
@ChoatieMom - is the “extra” task that isn’t done weekly also done on Thursday or do you do that a different day? Do you have a list/schedule for those?
I am thinking doing one extra, larger, less-frequently-occurring job per week would be a good idea.
It depends on the size of the task. We’ll do it on Thursday unless it’s a larger task, changing air filters versus washing all the windows, for instance. We try to avoid housecleaning or any other work on weekends if at all possible. We do have a list that we keep posted inside one of the laundry room cabinet doors. We cross off and add-to as necessary so we’re never wondering what needs to be done or what to tackle next.
THAT level of household cleanliness would be my fantasy in my next (more perfect) life! My own goal is to clean out the garage enough to put a car in it!

I have the same system, loosely. Regularly cleaning, well, regularly. Deeper cleaning (sheets, etc) every two weeks. Special projects as they pop up - shredding, vacuuming steps, etc.
The big thing that I would love to do - painting the garage and fixing the floor - the husband doesn’t see a need for. So, for now, that’s on the way back burner.
At my old house, I would wash the windows once a month. Here, maybe once a year. I’m no saint. =))
@lookingforward I wonder about that, too, when I see open shelving. I know how dusty things get in my house. I prefer keeping my kitchen stuff in cupboards.
We have under-counter open shelving so not as open to air as above-counter open shelving, but the dishes we keep on the open shelves are the ones we use the most, so they are not sitting long enough to accumulate dust, and we get plenty of dust In the desert.
I also prefer drawers to cabinets and would have more of them if I could. None of our cabinets/drawers anywhere in the house have knobs/pulls/handles. They are very ergonomic and easy to open by ample but concealed fingertip recesses at the bottom of the upper cabinets and at the top of the lower cabinets.
For utensils, I got a very, very large (would hold a garden hose) round garden pot from Home Depot and spray-painted it with hammered copper paint to match our kitchen accents. It holds everything beautifully, but I did buy a smaller version of the same pot to hold my baking utensils because my baking corner is not near the stove where the big pot is.
My sister has no upper cabinets in her kitchen except over her ovens, and only bottom cabinets on the wall where her sink is (think one wall of a galley kitchen.) She has no open shelves, either. Instead she has a massive island (and I mean really massive - 15 ft long/6 ft wide) with draws on both sides (and several pull outs designed for spices, can goods, etc.) Each drawer is individually customized to hold specific items (plates, glasses, pots, lids, trays, etc.) No pulls on any of the draws. You just press on them and they open.
This thread got me motivated to clean out the draws in my island yesterday (I only have four, plus the bin pull out in my Island.) Threw away a lot of stuff from the junk drawer and just straightened up the others. I’m going to tackle my spice cabinet and the one I keep teas, sugar bowl, baking ingredients next.
As infrequently as possible.

I got my clothes dryer vent replaced today, and they cleaned the other vents. I didn’t know one was suppose to do this on a regular basis. It took 2 men about 40 minutes with all kinds of special hoses and equipment. I’m eager to see if things dry faster and better.
What a cool organizer for a cabinet!

I have this in my old kitchen(came with the house)which I partly remodeled to make it a laundry room, pantry.
I have something like your first link in my bathroom vanity drawer to put my hair dryer, curly iron, flat iron in. All are plugged in a power strip inside the drawer.
I don’t get the plugs in draw thing because you have to keep the draw open when doing your hair. That would bother me.
I’ve never seen anyone refer to a drawer as a “draw” before (in writing anyway). Is that a regional thing?
No. It’s my brain not being connected to my fingers.
^^^Lol! I do think I’ve heard people pronounce it that way; the -er being so soft as to almost not be pronounced. But I’d never seen it written out like that.
