I had always planned to transfer from VT (not just after the shootings), but now I’m a Junior and I’m certain that I want to due to mostly race intolerance related issues. What kind of cushion can i expect as far as acceptace from other schools if i pull the race card and after the shootings. I have a 3.0 flat right now in engineering, is ivy league out of the question? Also will they do anything as far as bending the deadlines for transferring since I pretty much just decided. I’m not trying to take advantage of the shootings or something but I need to know realistically what my options are. Thanks

I don’t think many schools are taking applications anymore (if any at all), so I think transferring is out of the question, even considering what happened at VT. You can call prospective schools and explain the situation, but I don’t think there’s anything they can do at this point.

ok. Imma set some things clear: 1) you are a junior right now, so next year you will be a senior i assume. With this in mind, most state schools do not accept applicants after their junior year. Also, if you decide to transfer to an ivy, they cap your units so u will not be admitted as a senior. 2) a 3.0 is a little too low for ivy 3)the deadlaines have passed and 4) why are you applying this late in the game? The race intolenrence issue should have bothered you enough back when u were a sophmore.

I think mojo has outlined the key questions and issues.

The determining factor in your case will be whether any school that would appeal to you will accept a transfer after the junior year*. Virtually every school I know of requires you to spend 2 years there to obtain their degree.

Whether some school would make an exception in your case to any of their normal routines (deadline (long passed for the type of schools you mention), # credits they will accept or GPA they usually see), none of us can say.

There is really nothing wrong using the traumatic experience at VT in your contacts with schools which interest you. I think you need to call the Admissions offices, speak to the Transfer specialist (if they have one) and see whether they will consider you for transfer.

My S transferred from Tulane after Katrina. He had to, as Tulane eliminated his major. I think he got into all the schools which accepted him on his merits. I also think many admissions committees looked upon the Tulane engineering students with a great deal of sympathy. Maybe that type of sympathy can be a tipping point for a qualified applicant. I don’t think it will get an unqualified applicant accepted, but it might lead to the bending of some routines.

*If you are an incoming junior, then this is a non-issue. And a 3.0 in Engineering (depending on VT’s reputation wrt grade inflation/deflation) is stronger than a 3.0 in many other majors. Engineering tends to be a pretty grade-deflated curriculum; but not everywhere.
