my parents also want me to apply to private colleges with a high acceptance rate for a possible scholarship

For UCs and CSUs, can you post the three GPAs recalculated from GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub ?

CSUDH and CSULA are non impacted campuses, and do not list statistics or data science as impacted majors. They should admit if you have the a-g courses with at least a 2.5 GPA (weighted capped).

You can get an idea of UC admission for a recent class at Freshman admission by discipline | University of California . You need to recalculate your weighted capped GPA (see link in post #2) to compare.

My UW for UCs& CSUs are 3.83 and my capped is 4.17

What is the highest level of math you will take, language, science, English, social science.

Any APs, etc?

For TO, scholarships at private may be harder to come by. Many colleges - especially publics - based on the test - so I would take it given you are a Junior - and see how you do. Of course, for the UCs it won’t matter.

Yeah I skipped the social science courses during the school year by taking them over the summer. Also I put my future APs in there since im taking AP Lang, AP Calc AB and AP Bio this year so I plan to take AP Stats, APES and Dual enrollment English next year + I plan to take gov over the summer aswell.

How many years is social science will you have ? How about lab science ? Take the test if you want more $$.

Based on the first post, the OP will have:

  • 4 of English
  • Math through calculus
  • 4 of science but not physics
  • 4th+ level (AP level) in LOTE
  • Some unspecified history and social studies
  • Unspecified art – note required for UC and CSU
  • Some CS and other academic electives

There will be lots of LACs and/or privates with large money - and even OOS large publics as you know.

The question is -

Does the OP want a larger type (UC) or smaller - like LAC.

If the OP has $20K and this includes all, they won’t likely end up at a UC - living costs are near that much alone.

If they had an SAT/ACT, there are public colleges outside of CA (typically Midwest or SouthEast) that can get that low. Private won’t get that low - but if the student qualfies for need perhaps. Finally, they have access to WUE - so others can get into the 20s that are on the list - but may not be to OPs liking - but a UC will be unaffordable.

I’ll stand by my recommendation that as a Junior, OP should take the SAT/ACT for max scholarship opportunity.

OP may get financial aid. Also, if the OP lives in southern California, some of the listed schools may be commutable.

But given the vagueness, the OP needs to talk to the parents and have them use net price calculators.

Just seconding the advice you might as well give the ACT/SAT a shot.

People sometimes get very good need-and/or-merit scholarship offers from privates going Test Optional. But one of the easiest ways for a college to know you will likely get good competing offers (which is the basic reason they offer good scholarships, to woo you away from competitors) is a high test score by their standards.

So why not at least see what you can do?

Then there are many different sorts of privates, in many locations. You could focus on Data Science being an offered degree, which would narrow the list a bit, although it is a rapidly growing area. But there are a lot of other things to consider.

If you can actually visit a representative sampling of different colleges, possibly just nearby even if they might not make your actual list, that could be helpful to refine your sense of what is available, what you might prefer, and so on.

CP SLO only has a minor in data science. Statistics + DS Minor is possible.

On your list, CSULA does not appear to have a data science or statistics major. CSUDH appears to have data science as a suboption in the math major. You may want to check other CSUs for majors of interest.

Every UC except UCSC has a data science or similar major, as listed at Data Science | UC Admissions . UCSC does have a statistics major.
