Pocket Knife

Does anyone have suggestions for a good quality pocket knife that can be given as a gift. I don’t want a Swiss knife but a real knife (if that makes sense). My budget is around $100. It would be better if it could be ordered online.

REI has some, I’m pretty sure.

^ the good thing about REI is that if you are not happy with what you got, they’ll refund or exchange it for like a year, I think.

One of mine has a gerber and loves it. The other got a gerber, doesn’t like it and wants a leatherman. Can get them from REI, Cabela’s etc.
Depending on what it will be used for, consider a multi-tool instead of just a knife.

You should be able to find a really nice Leatherman on that budget - maybe get it engraved as well.
If you go with Gerber they will laser etch it.

Thank you for all the responses! I really don’t know what I am doing. I don’t own a knife or know anything about picking one. I am buying one for a friend (a guy), and he had one before that he lost – it was an old and not so good one that he was handed down from a friend (I am not exaclty sure). He really loved it though.

The tools idea sounds interesting, but would that sacrifice the quality/size of the knife, because I am fairly sure he wants a regular-size one not a Swiss Army type one. Also, I saw one that had a screwdriver built in, but wouldn’t that only work on one particular screw type and, therefore, not be very useful. I guess I am wondering just how useful the tools are.

Again, I am just really lost. So if anyone has anything to add, please do.

I live in NYC, so if there is a store I can go to rather than order online, that may work too.

Look at the [Buck Knives](http://www.buckknives.com/). I’m sure they’re easily found in NYC.

The absolute best folding knives are made by a company called benchmade. I collect knives, I’ve owned many (spyderco, benchmade, CRKT, gerber) and I love my benchmade the most. I’ve carried it for four years or so now. Any benchmade knife with the axis lock (considered by many to be the best folding knife locking mechanism around) is absolutely golden, and there are a lot to choose from. Also, Benchmade has a “Life-Sharp” service where you pay shipping and they will sharpen your knife as many times as you want back to a factory edge.

you can go to benchmade.come and check out all the different types if you wish ;)

^^^ You mentioned that you collect knives. Do you have any with the buit-in tools? Are they useful? Would you recommend one like that?

What did your friend use his knife for? One of my husband’s hobbies is whittling, so I got him a pocket carving knife that had different carving knives attached. He loves it. His other hobby is fishing and he has knives specifically for that. I’m not sure what he does with the knives, but I’m sure it’s not pretty. (Since he’s into catch and release lately, I don’t know what he does with those knives now.)
