I take a walk most mornings and like to listen to podcasts as I do so.
This generates a demand for about 6 hours of podcasts a week.
My current go to list includes The Moth, This American Life (but I’ve been listening long enough that I’ve already heard things that are reruns), Radiolab, and Dear Sugar.
I’ve listened to a few podcasts from Reply All, and I can highly recommend their four-part series, “On the Inside.” This series is a bit similar in premise to Serial’s story on Adnan, but I actually liked it better.
99% Invisible, Criminal, Everything Is Stories, Lore, Longform, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, You Must Remember This, and Miracle Nutrition With Hearty White. If you enjoyed the TV show The West Wing, Josh Malina (who played Will Bailey) has a newish podcast called The West Wing Weekly in which he and his co-host are watching and discuissing the entire series straight through, in order.
Love the West Wing Weekly and Wait, Wait. Others I like: Modern Love, Amicus, Science and Creativity from Studio 360, Longform, Fresh Air, On the Media, and Snap Judgement.
I don’t download all by subscribing. Some I check weekly and decide if I want to listen before downloading.
I am looking for more podcasts with book recommendations. My favorite, Books On the Nightstand, is going off the air. :(. Not to hijack, though.
I’m a Books on the Nightstand listener, too. Was sorry to hear Ann and Michael’s news; they had great book recommendations.
I listen to tons of podcasts, but I’m starting to get tired of some of them so I’m always looking for new ones. Here’s my LONG list:
BOOKS:
Books and Authors/ BBC – Two podcasts in one feed: A Good Read (my favorite) and Open Book.
NY Times Book Review
Slate’s Audio Book Club
Aloud at the LA Public Library
HUMOR / TRIVIA
Judge John Hodgman – Judge Judy format, with commedian John Hodgman as the judge. Funny and insightful. My favorite. (Every third or fourth episode they “clear the docket” and just read letters from people with disputes; those episodes are not as good).
No Such Thing As A Fish
Good Job Brain
Ask Me Another
CULTURAL / GENERAL INTEREST
Double X Gabfest – Slate pocast on issues affecting women. Super smart and funny
Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell – brand new
Invisibilia
Happiness with Gretchen Rubin
Fresh Air
Ted Radio Hour
To the Best of Our Knowledge
Freakonomics Radio
This American Life
Philosophy Bites
Hidden Brain
Slate Cultural Gabfest
All Songs Considered
Pop Culture Happy Hour
Slate Lexicon Valley
A Way With Words
New Yorker Radio Hour
The Moth
Please Explain / Leonard Lopate
Serial
Eliza Starting at 16
Stranger (but I’m kind of sick of this one)
POLITICS:
Slate Political Gabfest
New Yorker Politics
NPR Politics
Five Thirty Eight Elections
Slate Trumpcast (scathing podcast about what they call “the national emergency”)
Another vote for the West Wing Weekly. Last week’s episode will take you two walks though as it’s an interview with the cast, Tommy Schlamme, and Aaron Sorkin from the ATX television festival. I’m also listening to Modern Love, Pantsuit Politics, and just subscribed to Malcolm Gladwell’s new podcast - Revisionist History.
Along with podcasts on books: “Smart Podcast Trashy Books”, from Sarah Wendell and the other women at SBTB. It’s ostensibly reviews of romance novels, but ranges pretty far afield into discussions of literary tropes, social issues, and other random bits, plus it’s hilarious.
@nottelling, how do you have time??? I am jealous.
Regarding the last West Wing podcast (the interview/panel one), I didn’t actually enjoy it – too much of a love fest, all tripping over each other to praise the others. But I have loved the others, and am enjoying watching again prior to listening.
I’m addicted and need to cut down! Podcasts have really cut into my reading time (and my music-listening time.) Plus, I don’t have a TV, have a long commute and listen to podcasts while exercising, doing chores, getting ready, doing art work, and lots of other things. And a lot of podcasts on the list don’t come out every week, have lots of re-runs, and I don’t listen to every episode of every one (maybe one a week of Fresh Air, for example). But I do find the form highly addictive. I spend a fortune on data!
I’m getting way ahead for The West Wing Weekly and I can’t decide if Aaron Sorkin was a savant or if we are just incredibly backwards to be dealing with the issues that are front and center in season 1.
If any of you fans of West Wing Weekly are in the LA area, West Wing Weekly and Five Thirty Eight (Nate Silver’s organization) are having a joint live show this weekend.
Not trying to take this off-topic, but what’s the best way to use one’s Android phone to consume podcasts at low-cost when one is not connected to Wi-Fi? There are so many I’d like to listen to…but I don’t really know how (technically/financially). Please advise, if this is an appropriate question here.
Don’t know if it is the same as an iPhone, but I set up my subscribed podcasts to only check for new episodes while I am connected to WiFi. And I only check for new ones on the ones I don’t subscribe to when on WiFi. But I think the real answer is that I don’t store them in the cloud, they are on my phone. I have to manage space carefully, though (next time I’m ponying up for more phone memory!). I delete them right after listening, and don’t automatically subscribe to ones I may not want all of.
