Podcast recommendations

I thought I would make this post and if you have a podcast you’ve enjoyed, put it here. Kinda like the book recommendations

I have 2

Dirty John, a mystery, crime podcast. It’s short and all the episodes are out so you can listen to the entire mystery

Constitutional. It’s from the Washington Post and is about surprisingly the constitution lol!

Bumping this up to see if anyone has some recommendations. I am not in the habit of listening to podcasts, but I’m doing an 8-hour drive by myself at the end of the month and would love to have a few to keep me entertained. Tell me what you enjoy, and why!

First I think you also have to tell us what you enjoy so we can suggest!!

My subscribed podcasts:
Satellite Sisters
Milk Street (cooking)
Cherry Bombe (women in the food industry)
Happier
Happier In Hollywood

Sometimes…
By The Book (two women who choose a self help book and then live it for two weeks and then evaluate)

I would like to find another health/women’s health related podcast.

You Must Remember This - about old Hollywood -the Manson Family one was particularly good
Wait Wait don’t tell me - NPRs news quiz
Slow Burn -about Nixon/watergate
I was there too- interviews with people who had small parts or behind the scenes jobs in Movies.

Right now, it’s Presidential (Washington Post)

Honestly I have not really explored the wide world of podcasts, so I’m curious to hear what others enjoy. I have made good use of the binge-watching thread, finding a number of good shows that I might not have found on my own. Hoping for the same here! Specifically for my trip, I’m thinking something light/funny, entertaining, or uplifting- versus informational.

I meant you need to share what kind of interests you have. News? Humor? Movies/TV? Self help? Gardening? Food/Cooking/Baking??? History??? Literature?

There are OODLES and OODLES of podcasts!

For travelling, I like Wait, wait don’t tell me, Moth and This American Life and maybe a history podcast. Dirty John, Serial, S-town is binge worthy.

Joe Rogan,Tim Ferris, James Altucher, NPR how I built this.
These are all great, interesting and successful people are interviewed.

Mine are TV based

The West Wing Weekly: goes through every episode of the old The West Wing week by week. Josh Malina who was on the show is one of the hosts which prevents this from being a typical fan based gushing podcast. It instead it’s filled with visits from actors/writers and directors from the show. Including occasionally the brilliant Arron Sorkin. It also gets amazing guests who are relevant to the plot of the show. For example on the episode where the plot involved “ Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” the podcast talked about how things had changed and brought on the First gay Secretary of the Navy.An episode of the show that dealt with Canada resulted in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a guest.

Slate’s The Americans Podcast : Airs each week after an episode airs. Also “ insider” because the head of Slate is the brother of the creator of The Americans. Guests include the shows actors, directors, set designers (this was fascinating because they will only use era authentic things on set), as well as the translator who translate the parts of the script that are spoken by the Russians into Russian ( the show only hires native speakers to play the parts of Russians, other than the two leads). Guests also include former FBI agents as well as a former real life Soviet spy who was part of the program ( spies living in the US while pretending to be Americans) that the show is loosely based on.

Two NYT podcasts: The Daily (“This is how the news should sound. Twenty minutes a day, five days a week, hosted by Michael Barbaro and powered by New York Times journalism.” One story per day)

Still Processing (“A Culture Conversation” Awhile ago there was a fascinating episode on the Obama portraits. The two hosts went to the National Portrait Gallery and, as they walked through the gallery of presidential portraits, talked about Barack Obama’s in context.)

Three WNYC podcasts: On the Media (“How the media shapes our worldview”)
Stay Tuned with Preet (“A series about justice and fairness”)
Radiolab (“Stories and Science”)

and Invisibilia (NPR, Stories of Science and Human Behavior)

Since I’m not the OP, it’s not just about me - I’m sure there are many on this forum who will benefit from others sharing what they listen to and why! The last 2 posts are very helpful because they provide some explanation. I would never have said in this thread that I was interested in art (I’m not, really), but I AM interested in that one about the National Gallery and the Obama portraits! Thanks everyone, keep them coming!

The Malcolm Gladwell series! I think it may be called Freakonimics. Lots of interesting ideas delivered as short lectures. There are 3 in the middle of the series on education that may be of particular interest to folks here on CC.

I listen to them in the middle of the night sometimes when I’m having trouble sleeping. Not to sound like I’m schizophrenic but listening to podcasts helps push away the thoughts that roll around in my head that keep me from sleeping. I’m listening to malcolm gladwell right now as well. I listened to an interesting interview by Jenna Fischer about what it took to become a working actress. Not that I have any notion of acting, but it was interesting to hear how she got her job in The Office and her advice to people that can translate into any field. I’m also listening to an audio book too - Little Fires Everywhere. However, I have to keep going back because I fall asleep.

@eyemamom - you brought up another question for this newbie - when do you all actually listen to these? Driving? Exercising? Cooking? While doing housework? Bedtime? Or do you actually make time to sit and listen?

Love Jenna Fischer, I’ll look for that one!

She may have done more but Jenna Fischer was interviewed in Episode 27 of Happier In Hollywood.

I listen to my podcasts when I’m driving or on purposeful long walks. So it’s multi tasking. I could never just sit and listen and do nothing else!

Some of the podcasts that I listen to
30 for 30 podcast, sports related but very interesting even if you are not a diehard sports fans
At the movies with Arch and Ann, 2 movie critics dish about movies lol
Constitutional and Presidential, from the Washington Post
Dirty John
Embedded from NPR
In the Dark, about the hunt for a child killer
Masterpiece Studio
NPR politics
Origins with James Andrew Miller
S-town
Someone knows something
The Ezra Kline show
The First, history
Bowery Boys, about nyc history

Masterpiece Studio, Modern Love, The West Wing Weekly, & Pod Save American are my regulars. For limited series, I enjoyed Making Oprah and The Promise ( a Nashville NPR podcast on the challenges of local public housing).

My husband loves Ball and Chain; I don’t have to listen to it as he tells me about it every week :)) Hall-of-Fame basketball player Rebecca Lobo and her husband, Steve Rushin discuss marriage and other incendiary issues in the finished half of their basement. My husband has always enjoyed Steve’s writing in Sports Illustrated, which is how he stumbled onto their podcast. They are a funny couple and talk about everyday life in a family. They also read and discuss listeners emails, which my husband has become a regular!!

Two parcast podcasts:
“Cults”–fascinating podcast about cults all over the world. How they got started, their leaders, lots of history about how they grew. Some are those you’ll readily recognize and others not so much but all interesting.

“Haunted Places”–just a fun listen.

I also like Marc Maron’s podcast–He interviews comics and sometimes actors. As you would expect the stories are entertaining. My favorites (old ones) were Robin Williams and Carl Reiner.
