Pods

Anyone ever use these for a long-distance move?

We did alot of research on this before making a deicision to move D’s stuff from Chicago to the west coast. The best website we found was one called: movingscam.com
which had loads of information and ultimately led us to our final choice.

For the right situation, the pods seem to be a cost-effective method and many people have been happy with their choice.

There was one pod company we saw great reviews for called ABF U-Pack which was quite a bit less expensive than the brand name PODS. (There was a problem for D using it in the Chicago area and it would have required a couple extra moves since they couldn’t come to her storage location in the city. So where you’re moving from/to will be relevant in your selection.) In our cross country drive we noticed many semis out there which were ABF. Before this, I’d never even heard of them.

For her, the best option ended up to be hiring a mover. After we did all the cost comparisons for a u-haul/penske vs pod-type vs mover, factoring the gas, hotels, travel expenses etc, the full-scale mover was only $400 more and WORTH EVERY PENNY. They arrived on time at both ends, delivered everything and put things together, took away all the boxes, etc. After doing so many self-service moves, loading/driving/unloading etc, this seemed so easy in comparison. Given it was a 2000+ mile move, it was a much lower stress way to go.
It wasn’t perfect–a couple things had minor damage. But it was SO much less stressful.

I highly recommend checking out the movingscam website. Amazing source of great information to sort through all the things to think about.
