POE vs Drafting/CAD? Which should I take in highschool?

I have to decide between taking Principles of Engineering and Drafting/CAD. I would take both, however Drafting/CAD takes up two of my periods. I am going into my Jr year next year. Which one would you recommend for a person interested in going into Civil Engineering?

I would suggest you take Drafting/CAD not because you’re interested in civil engineering, but because it sounds like a more interesting class. If you like drawing and creating things on the computer, you will enjoy the class. I enjoyed the class greatly and wish my university offered higher level CAD courses.

When you say you “have to decide between Principles of Engineering and Drafting/CAD”, what do you mean? Are you in a certain track of some sort?

I mean that I have to choose which class I am going to take I am going to take next year. I can only choose one or the other because of how my schedule is.

“Principles of engineering” is a course with a nebulous name that doesn’t sound like it’ll teach you anything particularly useful. Drafting/CAD will give you a useful skill you can use in many fields, not just engineering, and having exposure to it early can be advantageous if you go on to study CE or ME, for example. Go with drafting/CAD.
