Poem Contest/Award Question

Last year my teacher made our class enter a poetry contest and over the summer I was contacted asking if i wanted my poem published. My parents wouldn’t let me do it b/c of confidentiality etc(how rude), so how can I list this under awards/honors if my poem wasn’t actually published? if it helps, it was for Pine Tree Poetry

could I say chosen for publication?

Since it was an award/honor you did not accept I would not put it on your resume. Your parents made the choice that you could not participate. The result of that choice was that you do not have that honor to put on your resume. Putting “chosen for publication” makes it sound like you were published and it hasn’t happened yet…

the thing is i would have accepted it, but i wasn’t allowed to. so basically i entered the contest and was selected for publication and wasn’t allowed to publish my work, so wouldn’t being selected still count as an honor?

It would count as an honor as long as the award was legit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of so-called poetry contests that really are scams to get people to overpriced buy books with their poems in them.

[Pine Tree Poetry](http://www.pinetreepoetry.com/)

this is the website for it

It looks like a scam to me – a way of getting proud parents to buy copies of an overpriced book featuring a poem by their kids.

meh, our teacher made us enter, so that’s why i did it
