I did Latin for 3 years when I went to school in England (now I’m in Korea), but at a very slow pace so we never got around to doing Latin poetry. I’ve signed up for the SAT II Latin on 4th December coz it seemed like the easiest one around for me. Until I realised that they might give you some poetry, that is.

Nobody at my new school does Latin and the only teacher who did it at high school isn’t really good enough to help. I think I heard somewhere that only scansion, which seems not too difficult, is tested; but if I have to actually do a comprehension on a piece of poetry I am STUFFED. Can anybody tell me I can expect on the test?

I posted this question in Spring on the old board and got some good answers - try a search. Based on those answers, my daughter (who got an A* in GCSE Latin but was finding the practice test impossible) ended up ditching the Latin SAT 2 and doing Writing and English Literature instead. I never studied Latin so do not grasp the nuances but apparently there is a huge difference in how Latin is taught in the US and UK and success in an English school Latin course does not necessarily translate into success on the SAT. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, samuck. I had read your thread some time ago so I decided to take a look at the Latin test they have on the Real SAT II Subject Tests book first; and I was OK with most of the stuff there - otherwise I wouldn’t have signed up for the SAT II Latin in the first place. It wasn’t until later that I found out about the possibility of poetry coming up (the sample test did not have any). My only real concern is what they might tell you to do with a piece of poetry if they give you any on the test.

Latin was *****ing impossible, I got a 580 on that, and usually I do well on standardized tests: 770m/760v/800wh/800biom/790mIIc/770ush/770wr/770chem/720lit

but a 580. Don’t take Latin. It will destroy you. Own you. lol.

hmmm what did you get on the sample test in the 22 Real SAT II book? Reading your replies, I’m kinda getting worried that maybe it’s not a good specimen… I got something like 650 and that was when I hadn’t touched a Latin textbook or had a lesson for 4 months…

I took Latin as a sophomore in a plain regular Latin III class and scored a 720 w/o studying at all. It ain’t that hard…just know the grammar and stuff. Tell me is u need help although I don’t take Latin now…
