United airlines says it still going. I will check before I go to sleep and early in the morning. I am not leaving till 11:30 pm so hopefully the early flight will canceled and put on my flight…
If not, I will have lunch at ohare and Uber back home. I am taking an actual cab in the morning since it seems Uber has been gouging in the morning these last few days. I am not paying for it so doesn’t really matter. I was going to take the bus to the blue line to Ohare but NOT tomorrow!??
@thumper1, I remember when my kid was in school and it was really bitter, they’d delay because the buses sometimes had difficulty starting up in bitter cold temps.
I feel cold just thinking about the way below zero temps. Our Florida version is not reaching 60 (normal is 70)- actually wearing long pants and my summer jacket. The locals overdress.
I don’t miss the snow/ice/bitter cold of Wisconsin this month. Do miss so much else about the region.
Reasons for shutting down U’s is NOT that some students aren’t used to the weather. Talked to a couple of WI people today and the wind is blowing the snow over the roads, plus the ice and cold plus wind chill hazards.
Friend said they’re expecting above freezing temps and rain on the weekend. I’ll bet the temps will plunge again and make the iciness even worse.
It is cold here but not what other people are experiencing. Still wish I was in FL.
ugh - Just looked at the weather and it says it’s 22 but feels like 16 right now. And I left my coat in the car so that will be fun when I leave work. At least I have a scarf and gloves and it’s not too far a walk.
I was shocked that my DIL’s plane took off this morning on time from Columbus to Vegas - and on Spirit which I didn’t have full faith in! - way to go Spirit!
S was suppose to fly out of Detroit to Atlanta tomorrow afternoon on SW for work- that flight was cancelled yesterday morning! Makes you wonder how this all works!
I am so done with this! I thought I pre-paid by my pipes to my only currently working bathroom bursting 10 days ago. Nope, guess not. Opened the basement door this afternoon to a flooded basement. The drain line from the sump is frozen, the softener charged, and all the discharge water is standing in my basement. I quit
Plumber is on speed dial. I’m sure he cringes when he sees my number…he’s already been here and will be back tomorrow. Thankful for him.
We had some trouble with our kitchen sink on an outside wall and the hot water pipe. Cold water was running fine but not the hot. H narrowed down an area in the basement with a draft and with some work and some heaters we got it going and the draft taken care of. Hoping it “sticks” for the next 30 hours or so till the cold lifts.
My H just got the call that schools are closed tomorrow because of extreme cold (he teaches high school) but the nearby university I teach at is still open, drat it.
I have classes all over campus tomorrow–long walks in howling wind and cold. NOT looking forward to it.
@garland are you still in MI? We’re all closed over here, including unis.
Stay safe, anyone who has to go back tomorrow.
My dad was a plumber and he comes out of his retirement on days like this to fix emergency situations. He’s already made a handful of house calls to friends and friends-of-friends.
@sryrstress. Sorry, it sucks. We had three years in a row of basement flooding that came from the city sewers. We had to cut the drywall, clean, take up the carpet etc etc. We had water coming in from different areas. The last one I just cut the drywall, and ripped up the carpet myself. I already had the mold/bacteria spray that the pros use ("called Shockwave). They told me what to do. I do feel for you. . Hopefully it gets taken care of.
We just had a water heater fixed. Then the next week (we have two 50 gallon tanks) one tank was leaking. With the kids in college we figured we can use just one tank so they shut off the one. Then the following week the second one was leaking. They just replaced both with a 75 gallon tank. When I called the plumber he’s like what’s happening now… Not even a Hello… Lol.
My D, who is a San Diego native and has never lived anywhere cold, is working at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. I tried to help her get ready and pack but she insisted she was wearing dresses with tights under them. She is learning real quick what real cold is!!
Hoping my husband’s car starts when we can finally get to it in a couple of days. It’s been stranded at our local hospital since Monday. He drove himself to the ER and then was transported to Philadelphia by ambulance. I didn’t have time to call anyone to help me move it before following him down. I’ve been staying in a motel instead of driving back and forth.
We just got an emergency alert through the amber system asking us to turn our heat down to 65. We’re turning down further because we are physically able to.
D1 is flying from NYC to Minneapolis for a business meeting. I told her she was crazy, then I said to wear boots and down coat, forget about looking pretty.
We got an amber alert type alert at 10:36 last night to turn our thermostat down. We were dead asleep and H was getting up at 3:18 to go to work. Super annoyed.
I have my amber alert turned off on my phone because of this.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t believe that they are running out of gas. I do believe that they will have to buy gas at a very inflated rate that they can’t pass onto customers.
Well both cars start. Mine gave me some trouble but then kicked in. I have been starting them a few times a day just to get them warmed up. No pipe breaks in the house (yet). My flight out of Ohare seems to be fine. It’s coming in from New York so that shouldn’t be an issue.
Just have to get dog out to be boarded and cab to Ohare. North Carolina is supposed to be in the 50’s. As long as it is not 50 below… Then I am good…
My furnace stopped working in the past few hours. Temperature in the house is down to 63. But I’m booked for the day’s first appointment with the HVAC company.
