I’m in MD and it’s 27 degrees. We had a little snow yesterday and an early release. School is closed today due to “anticipated emergency weather conditions this afternoon.” Yes, we are wimps…It’s only going to get colder, but nothing like you all in the midwest! Brrr!
There’s a water main break at a local intersection, about 4 trucks and multiple workers have been there for a few hours, temp is around -12. Brutal, I hope they can take breaks.
So my plan only worked so well. I played with my dog, chased him around the house, he did training for treats then went to his dog carpet thing and crapped and threw up. (:… Oxyclean carpet cleaner and a clothes washer is a good thing. He is now sleeping all day. I feel so bad…
He will go out a few more times when needed but it’s brutally cold.
I saw the bubble blowing today on our local news. That’s cool.
Ah! I wish I had known about the bubble trick sooner! I’d be prepared!
Survived the first night of -23. The teens are still in bed at 2 PM, and I can’t blame them.
The bubbles sound neat! I don’t think I could survive sub-0 temps. Stay safe, everyone!
@knowsstuff - I’m waiting for my dog to throw up. That’s what happens if he holds it in too long. I’m taking him to the sunporch “potty area” every 1/2 hour at this point. He still wont go
@momofsenior1 he’s been licking his lips and acting a bit strange the last few days. So I see now he was getting sick.
He won’t take peptobismal. Think I will make some rice and mix with his dinner.
At least he’s sleeping now most of the day so I. Guess that is good for now.
Here in Maryland the CC where I teach had a late start at 10, so my 9:30 am class was cut short by a whole 1/2 hour.
DH was surprised to see me pop out of bed at the usual time today. His workplace follows the federal government late start/early closing/closed schedule and he didn’t have to be there until 11 and planned to sleep in. Since he was awake early, he cleaned off my car for me. The commute was the fastest in ages - public schools closed, feds not working until 11, local govt slowed down too. When I drove home at noon, there were brief white-outs as new snow blew through the area. Now it is clear and sunny and about 24.
Sibs back in Iowa are sharing their low temp records on Facebook and one linked the page of a local distillery that has a short video about whiskey science - yes, you can make whiskey slushies if you are in Iowa today. I don’t think I can share the link here. Just search for Mississippi River Distilling Company and you should be able to find it.
Stay warm friends!
We are having a snow squall at present. The real cold will hit us tomorrow.
This video of a snow day announcement is a thing of beauty, folks.
Enjoy!

A university io Iowa student was found dead outside this morning. No alcohol in his system. Not sure how long he’d been out.
Oh, that is just awful!
-11 was nice while it lasted, on the way back down now.
So sad about that Iowa kid. Just called both kids. My son actually answered but my daughter is on her… “I am sooo busy I don’t have time to talk” kick… But she does text back …
My kids both live in warm weather states…no polar vortex for them.
The snow stopped, but the wind is picking up…and temps are falling!
I got the same snow squall Ctmom got. Now it’s just blowing around. Tonight and tomorrow will be the coldest. Of course I know 7 degrees is nothing considering what most of you are dealing with.
Both my pups - even my wee Chin, don’t mind going out in bitter cold weather at all. I don’t even have a coat for my littlest one. It’s rain they both hate.
Very sad about the Iowa student.
I just saw a photo on Twitter of a University of Minnesota student crossing a street, clad in a parka (on top) and shorts. He allegedly told the photographer that he wouldn’t provide his name because his mom would be mad at him.
Two hour delay here tomorrow…just got the call. Like it’s going to be warmer with less wind chill at 10 than at 8…not!
But at least I don’t have to run around in the morning. It’s been quite a week!
So far my flight is still on to leave ohare but a friend of mines flight was canceled for tomorrow coming into ohare.
@Knowsstuff, it was just reported on the national news that flights are delayed at O’Hare because of refueling lines freezing.
