Police officers and the good things they do

I think people here would say that I’m pro-law enforcement.

The first link is from a police department not far from me. I had no idea about that story until I Googled “police kids cancer” to find stories just like this to add to this topic.

Just because something gets 2 minutes on a local television station doesn’t mean everyone hears about it. I watch one of 4 local news stations where I live. If that ABC affiliate doesn’t cover a story, I don’t hear about it generally. Frankly, some people tune out positive stories about law enforcement anyway.

Our evening news and local newspaper used to have some of these upbeat stories. But these days we get our news other ways. Sometimes though I do see it on facebook and nextdoor.

I’m crediting Ruby the pup with the rescue, but the officer and the firefighter each get credit for an assist. Dogs are awesome.

These men, working for the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, hand out warm gear, snacks, and sometimes gift cards. All are donated.

I received this link from my sister-in-law. She is a ‘backseater’ and told me all about these amazing community service officers.

This video has a couple more details about the rescue. Smart thinking by the officer, and the dog was a great helper!

The man was in the water for 16 minutes but was OK after being taken to the hospital.

We’re watching last night’s On Patrol Live that we DVRed. During the opening the host mentioned that one of the co-hosts, an off duty police officer, almost didn’t make it in time to start the show. On the way there he saw a woman on the side of the road with apparent car trouble. He stopped to help and found a male in the car, unconscious, with a needle in his arm. He used narcan to bring the man back.

This is neither good, nor bad on the part of the police officer. It’s more of a reality check honestly. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Why can’t drivers be more careful? An unsuspecting person in their car, and a trooper just doing his job, are both lucky to be alive.

Rescuing a menagerie!

It’s non-traditional animal rescue day!

Several years ago we had a big dog that would regularly run through the electric fence whenever a storm was brewing.

She’d taken off and go for (sometimes miles). Several times our local, suburban officers helped us find her.

One time they dropped her off in the police car (sitting in the back seat, looking out the window of the marked car).

Local cops had to deal with… a vintage nuke rocket.

Here is another link if the first one is behind paywall.

Yikes!

There is a lot of weird and dangerous stuff cops have to deal with… this might be a first - a nuke capable rocket!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the lake, cops had to check out a smaller yet potentially lethal hazard:

40 years ago, my father saw the cop that had pulled him over and taken him in after he failed a sobriety test 3 years prior. He was working extra hours in a mall. Dad went up to him and said “Three years ago, you took me in for DWI.” The cop took a step back and said “Oh really?” My Dad held out his hand and said “Thank you. You saved my life and my marriage.”

The cop happily shook his hand and expressed his pleasure with how well my Dad was doing. I still get a little choked up when I remember that.

Wrong way drivers seem to be a current trend. Who knows whose life or lives this officer saved.
