The thing about facebook statistics is - when such a high percentage is “no answer given”, it’s hard to really gather anything from it.

One could rely on trends (“Well, if 50% are unknown, it’s safe to just multiply the given percentages by two!”), but it’s impossible to tell whether those trends would be accurate. For all we know, of that 50%, the majority could be all be liberal. It’s impossible to say.

50% is a large sample size. You don’t need every student to respond to see trends.

im REALLY bored, so i went through and found the most and least ‘conservative’ schools among the top 50 universities and lacs (plus reed).

most conservative:
washington & lee
furman
yeshiva
notre dame
wake forest
florida
rhodes
vanderbilt
william & mary

least conservative:
reed
macalester
oberlin
sarah lawrence
vassar
wesleyan
bard
swarthmore
grinnell
whitman

Since most colleges tend to have a large number of liberal students (and faculty) and a lot of people who are conservative probably don’t want to put their political viewpoints out in the open. I’m moderate/conservative politically and I go to an extremely liberal school 25 %+ (using facebook stats). There’s no way I would openly inform others of my political views.

Has anyone else noticed that the conservative schools all have lower PAs than their similarly ranked, more liberal peers?

I would think that some of that ranking trend (which I’ll take your word for) is explained by two factors–some of the colleges are in the south (against which I believe there is a bias) and some of them have a strong, visible church affiliation (which also engenders some bias). I don’t think it’s the fact that liberal schools are seen as better, but that the correlates of conservatism at some of these schools work against them when it comes to reputation. Not fairly, I’d emphasize.

erica…where did you gather your data? Very interesting stats.

^^ She found them on facebook.

wow liberals everywhere

Worried Student - that’s exactly what I was talking about.
