Political Leanings of CCers

I’m curious - which way do CCers lean on the political spectrum? Add a point to the direction you lean in general. I’ll include a middle ground for those indecisive ones :). I’m also curious to compare students vs. parents, so I’ll separate those.

By the way most students started out as liberals because they wanted to be free from their parents, aka rules. Later in life they will find liberalism doesn’t work because society needs rules and structures as contrary to the view of some, and society are built by people taking on responsibility, not freedom from it. Then if they see the light, become conservative, like me.

I have a problem with labeling myself as either completely “conservative” and certainly not a liberal. But not because I am “indecisive”: I just don’t agree with all the typical rhetoric of either group. So I wish there was some sort of continuum upon which I could place myself.

Short of that, I will have to say Centrist, I guess. But not for the reason you stated.

So liberals don’t believe in rules, structure, and responsibility? Think before you talk please.

That’s for my student and me. Because I believe in personal responsibility, but also believe compassion has a place in our society, and that those blessed by their parents, social status, and opportunities given to them by others need to realize, as one thread put it, “they were born on third base and think they hit a triple,” I am a liberal.

Even if I didn’t believe that, I’d be a liberal, because historically, the stock market performs better when a liberal is in the White House. I’m an economic conservative and a capitalist, and the Republican party in the States does not serve me well economically.

Depends on which direction you are facing since there is “light” at both ends of the tunnel.

edvest’s explanation of causation is one reason why I think this labeling is meaningless. What is meant by "liberal?’ “centrist?” “conservative?”

If one believes in small government, does one make a supporter of NCLB? of the Patriot Act? of DOMA? or the contrary?
What does taking on responsibility mean, exactly in terms of being a liberal, centrist, or conservative? Which rules are liberals or conservatives supposed to be upholding or not?

Since I have no idea what exactly these labels are supposed to mean substantively, I will not seek to take part in this survey, except to say that I am a strong believer in personal responsibility.

That depends on how you are investing. T-Bills or stocks, and also under Republicans we have had lower interest rates, which means more capital to spend, thus more to invest. How can you invvest if your mtg rate is double digit under someone like Carter? I don’t think he served anyone econimically.

Marite,
One of the foundations of the conservative party is less govt. involvement. Whereas, most liberals believe that govt should be involved in more social aspects of the govt…i.e. welfare, nationalized health, medicaid/care, s.s., etc.

b&p:

That is right. Except that “conservatives” nowadays have supported Republican policies such as NCLB, DOMA, the war in Iraq and other policies which “liberals” have opposed. Which is why the labels have become meaningless. I find myself in support of “traditionally conservative” policies in certain cases and of “traditional liberal” policies in others. But what is a centrist anyway? Someone who supports going only half-way to Iraq? (that would put the troops somewhere in Europe). I someone who thinks that the drinking age should be lowered back to 18 a centrist, a conservative or a liberal? Is someone who is deeply religious and thinks that there should be a clear separation of church and state a conservative or a liberal?
Is someone who thinks that we should strive to reduce the deficit and not mortgage our children’s future to the Chinese a liberal or a conservative?

I agree with Marite, that the labels are pretty meaningless. However, I think post no. 2 is nonsense. I’m pretty sure most people would classify me as a liberal, but I believe society needs rules and structure and that personal responsibility is important. I also believe in social safety nets, staying out of foreign entanglements, a balanced budget, and separation of church and state. I’ve become much more liberal due to the last eight years. I wouldn’t vote for a Republican dogcatcher.

I agree that the shades have become gray and the lines a little fuzzy. However, I believe that if you asked someone whether or not Roe V Wade should be overturned, you will find there are most likely 3 distinct answers.

Yes, the unborn child has a right (Conservative)

No, the unborn chils should not usurp the womens right (Liberal)

I can see both sides (Centrist)

Should we invade Iraq?

 1. Yes, he is a dictator and a breeding ground for terrorists (Conservative)
 2. No, what right do we have to go (Liberal)
 3. I can see both sides (Centrisit)

Were we wrong to invade?

 1. No, we are making progress and Hussein is gone (Conservative)
 2. Yes, look at all of our dead soldiers who died (Liberal)
 3. It doesn’t matter, we are there now let’s address how to fix it.

As far as church and state, I think on a whole that depends on the actual issue.
Prayer in school Conservative
No prayer in school Liberal

I think Centrist vote on ea issue, and do not follow 1 platform, whereas Conservatives and Liberals for the most part follow the platform.

Why is MoveOn.org and Arriana Huffington ticked at Obama…b/c he was against the war, pulling us out in 100 days, against FISA, against NAFTA, and now he seems to be for it.

I don’t agree with the way you’ve phrased it. What exactly does it mean to “see both sides?” Staying at home and not voting? In the case of Roe v. Wade, for example, does being a liberal mean abortion on demand? abortion in the case of danger to the mother’s physical health (but not mental health?) abortion only in the first semester, only in the first or second semester?

And what abou the war in Iraq? What exactly seeing both sides mean?
Did anyone actually support Hussein? What is meant by progress? military? political?

So prayer in school makes one a conservative. A prayer from which religious tradition?

marite, as a centrist i think the terminology could be replaced by liberitarian or moderate. Roe v. Wade - I think abortion as a form of birth control is stupid but you can’t legislate against stupidity. If a woman wants to have an abortion and risk the medical complications and the psychological impact that is her choice. I think partial birth’s are abhorrent and should be outlawed in all cases. As for Iraq, we broke it…right or wrong doesn’t matter any more, we need to fix it. The whole church and state thing is overblown and tired. There is nothing that says the gov’t has to disavow religion. It just can’t establish a religion or declare one as a national religion.

I do tend to vote with the republicans most often because of their military and economics stands. I don’t vote straight party line though. I look at each candidate and make the most informed decision I can. Unfortunately you are pretty much forced to go dem or repub at the national level.

. Edvest is pretty dead-on for me. The likes of Mathmom and Marite don’t like it because it sticks it to where it hurts them. Ouch! Get real, do we need more government in our lives ? Social safety net? Where’s $$$ coming from ? It’s nothing but rewarding non-producers with fruits of labor from the rest of us. I wasn’t borned on 3rd base. In fact I wasn’t even in the liner-up. No government aid means hard work to get to where I am and that’s alright with me. I sleep with clear conscience that what I have I earned. Miss-guided compassion is a signature of liberals.
