politics

Why do many many politicians have law degrees…how does this happen

Here’s a few:

a) Learning about how to interpret laws helps you see where new ones are needed and how they should be written.

b) Running for office is expensive and many lawyers are able to save enough money or have enough rich friends and connections to afford a campaign.

c) The skills that make people good lawyers (precision in language, outgoing nature, etc.) also make them good politicians.

Frankly, stacy, I tend to think that “precision in language” often makes a bad politician. A good statesman, maybe, but a poor politician. Politicians seem to be more successful when they ignore the question and/or give fuzzy answers.

I’d stick with your answer b).

A large factor is the connections they make, either in law school or once they start working.

Sometimes they do it for the same reason they went to law school - they don’t know what else to do.

Yes, but you have to be very careful about not saying anything specific accidentally. This is not a sarcastic response – it can actually be very hard.

“I misspoke”
