That depends on whether you’re looking at the business or consumer lines. I’m guessing Dell’s business line is the best (of those 3), but Lenovo’s ThinkPads are far better than any of Dell’s laptops, even the business ones.

I can’t really help you with the consumer lines, but I can tell you that I have a consumer HP laptop with lots of problems, and I know people with Dells and Toshibas that also have problems.

Apple :)

I should clarify my post: best laptops for college use

I received the new Consumer Reports issue last week and it reviewed laptops. Here is their ranking for 14-16 inch:

Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch

Toshiba Satellite A305-S4910

Asus X83Vm-x2

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6905

Dell Studio S15-158B

HP Pavillion dv5-123dx

Dell Inspiron 15

Lenovo IdeaPad Y430

Acer Aspire AS4730-4516

Toshiba has some terrific loaded laptops for good prices. After seeing that Toshiba had 2 recommended laptops on the list, I’m going to look into them a little bit more before my next laptop purchase.

In the same Consumer Reports issue that I noted above, they also rated tech support. Here is their rating:

Apple

Lenovo

Dell Only an insignificant 1 point difference between Lenovo and Dell–basically a tie

Toshiba

Sony

HP/Compaq

I have owned Dells and Toshiba laptops. Dells are quirky. Toshiba’s are much more solidly built.

We have Dell and Toshiba up and running at this moment at home but will be sending D, a vocal performance major, off to school with a Dell laptop. Their customer service is second to none- if anything, it’s just gotten better and better over the past 3 years! A word of caution- when you check school websites for the specs they suggest for incoming student’s computers, keep in mind the student’s major. Although the machines recommended at my D’s school (Cleveland Institute of Music) are wonderful and the prices are excellent, the school is affiliated with Case Western, and the computers listed are suitable for those engineering majors! When I inquired, I found out that I could save $600-$1000, since the thing of major important for her is the Enthernet card!! Hey, every penny counts!

Dell and HP is cost is a factor

If not,

Apple

I just ordered this from Lenovo.

Lenovo OneKey Recovery

Laptop Price: $791.12

2 year on-site repair and complete coverage (you can do without this. I got it because I saved a lot on the laptop). $101.15 CHEAP FOR 2YR. AT HOME WARRANTY PLUS ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION.

All for under $1,000. I’m sure there are better specs out there but it’s only going to be used for typing, internet, downloading music, watching the occasional movie and youtube video. If it doesn’t work out, there is 21 day return policy (15% restocking fee if the return is not due to a Lenovo error).

If anyone out there decides to buy from the Lenovo site, look for their Educational page and you’ll save money. I think in order to get to that section, go to the top of the page and point to the “solutions for”. Then, click on “Education and Gov’t”. Then click on “higher education” eventually you’ll get there.

It’s not a ThinkPad but it is a Lenovo with Lenovo Customer Service and Tech help.
It seems like a decent consumer laptop. I debated between the one I ordered and a Toshiba. I went with the Lenovo because it had DDR3 and for as little as an extra $100, I was able to upgrade the warranty for 2 yr. at home repairs and complete accidental coverage (when ordered through their “educational” section of the Lenovo website).

For anyone out there who wants a MacBook but prefers/needs a Windows Machine, check out the NEW Lenovo Y450, Y550, and Y650. Wow they look great. The only reason I ordered the older model (Y430) instead of the new Y450 is because the person that I’m giving the laptop to doesn’t like white keyboards.

Dell Adamo

The more expensive Dell laptops are good. HP has good mid-range priced laptops. Toshiba just sucks. I would stay away from Toshiba at all costs. The designs and engineering in their products are lacking. Apple is amazing. Lenovo is solid. Sony is amazing like Apple but expensive.

Consumer Reports makes money printing that garbage?

whats so great about macs??? and sony is too expensive, so stay away.

^Sony actually can be a good deal if you get a base model of say the CS or FW and then buy 3rd party upgrades (RAM, hard drive).

Apple and Sony sell because their products are quality products. I can personally tell you the fit and finish is a lot better than say a Dell or Toshiba. I pick up my Dell and the plastic creaks. With my mom’s Sony or my brother’s Sony, you won’t hear a single noise.
