POLL: When does your high school first allow you to take AP classes?

Freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year or never?

My first school only added AP courses to the curricula during my sophomore year, but I moved and went to a second school, which while students were allowed to take AP courses during their sophomore year, they did not allow me as they believed “I was not academically prepared” to take them. Come Junior year, I took four and aced all of them, while achieving some of the highest AP scores in my class.

Sophomore year, for most people. A few super-geniuses can take AP Calc their freshman year. A lot of APs are reserved for juniors/seniors or just seniors - and we offer the majority of APs.

Sophomore year for everyone. Even then, sophomore’s only have a choice of 2.

We can take any AP class that doesn’t have a prereq freshman year. So Environmental, Stats, Euro, and Psych are about it.

In our kids’ private independent school, they can only take APs in senior year (and then can only realistically take 2). School is planning to expand to a few more AP offerings soon, but not sure if they will still only be for seniors, or if they will push some down to junior year. School does well at placing about 10% of the class at HYPS or top schools like Chicago, Swarthmore, etc.

Junior year, unless you qualify for AP Calc before then…

Junior Year. All of the AP classes at my school have a prerequisite that has to be met first. It would be impossible unless a student doubled on courses.

It depends on the person. You can take AP sciences as a freshman if you have transfer credit from certain (rigorous) middle schools. And some people have taken AP Calculus AB or BC as freshmen. But most people take AP classes during sophomore year (usually one but i took two lul).

Sophomore year however starting next year freshman will be able to take AP World History

On paper, not until junior year. In reality they’ll let you take whatever you want if you have the initiative to go down and ask earlier. Hardly anyone does, though.

Sophomore year.

Freshman year; we’re allowed to take AP Human Geo, but I’m sure that if someone actually had the initiative to take more then guidance would let them.

Btw teachers not counselors get to make the decisions for AP class for our school

In math/science, you take APs whenever you are ready. Otherwise, AP World History is the first AP you can take. It’s for sophomores.

For math/science you have to finish a sequence first (like for BC Calc, you need Honors precalc and for AP chem, you need to take one year of Chem first).
Other APs are kind of open to whoever is up for the challenge. Sophomores can take AP Comp Sci. My friend took AP French her Freshman year, but she lived in a French speaking country for like a year or two, so that’s partly why.

Junior year.

My school allows kids to take APs freshman year, but it’s limited to math, computer science, and language (with an occasional music theory here and there.)

Sophomore year: u can take AP Psychology and/or AP World History

11th grade and you can only take APUSH, AP English Lang, or AP Art - BUT you can bet that they will conflict with staple junior classes like Chemistry which the non dumb kids take.
