Pomona college over rice, vandi,emory??

I was talking to this girl and she was telling me that her brother choosed Pomona over rice, vandi, emory…Would you do the same?

Pomona is easily one of the best schools in the country. I think of the list, Pomona and Rice are slightly above Vandi and Emory. If I liked LACs, I would definitely consider going to Pomona over the rest.

I definitely agree. Unless you’re in love with Houston or Atlanta, Pomona has much happier students and better job prospects.

Don’t know about the job thing but it is a quality school for a different type of student than those that would like the others.

i would but then again i am slightly biased.

“it is a quality school for a different type of student than those that would like the others.” What do you mean? What is the type of student that goes to pomona?

“Don’t know about the job thing but it is a quality school for a different type of student than those that would like the others.”

Rice and vandy are really conservative, southern, i don’t know about emory but i would assume it is, too

Pomona is in california and is supposed to be pretty laid-back

Rica and Emory aren;t that conservative. I would choose Pomona easily over these other choices.

Rice is far from conservative.

I have know a few people who went there and they were always a little unconventional and quirky. People I have known from the others were pretty conventional and more mainstream. Pomona is very much a make your own fun sort of place while the others are more social etc.

“Rice is far from conservative.”

I just see that rice is over half in-state, and when i think of texas, i think convervative; i don’t know anyone from texas who’s liberal, that’s why i say that

Read Texas Monthly. Liberal

I can easily see choosing Pomona over any school, period. It’s a terrific school and has the advantage of great weather/climate to go along with its great learning environment.

A year ago, my daughter’s top two choices were Emory University and Pomona College. Of all the schools we visited, we spent more time at Pomona than any other school, and it was #1 on her list up until a couple weeks after she returned from her visit to Atlanta/Emory. Eventually, she chose to apply ED to Emory (where she attends currently) and did not apply to Pomona because she received early notification of her ED acceptance at Emory.

My daughter did not value any school higher than Pomona, and she chose Emory only because it offered combined opportunities and benefits in her chosen path that few other schools could provide as well. It also has a great campus and the academic influences of a major research university to complement its liberal arts tradition. Climate was a small factor – she’s a California kid, so the snowy, cold-weather schools were not as attractive. One thing is certain… since she leans to the left, if she did not detect that Emory was reasonably liberal, she would have marked it off her list. I would not characterize Emory as being “conservative”.

A possible tipping point away from Pomona is that it is a small school (~1500 students) that is not only highly selective but has a hard-to-define eccentric quality. The “eccentric” quality is not a bad thing, but rather I got the impression that everybody I encountered was just very brilliant in his/her own way. Not a “normal” person in the crowd. Students seemed highly driven, but in a slightly laid-back way, almost as if the intensity was just beneath the surface. They all seemed to have a focused direction and knew where they were headed – which is a good thing, because they’re given a lot of support to discover on their own. All of the schools mentioned – Pomona, Rice, Vanderbilt, and Emory – are excellent in their respective ways. It’s just personal preference as to which is best for a given student.

See Austin, Texas.

I’m not arguing that it’s better, but personally I would go Vandy. Hands down.

I would go to Pomona > Rice > Emory > Vanderbilt, personally.

in order of personal preference, based only on my impression of the schools environments and their campuses, i’d probably go

pomona > vanderbilt > rice > emory

Vanderbilt > Rice > Emory > Pomona

All the schools offer top-notch academics, but this would be my personal preference.

I have never been to pomona i didn’t even know it existed before coming to the USA.next month i will be visiting USC and will check Pomona.Rice , vanderbilt and emory in another hand i had the chance to visited …I was extremely impressed with rice very rich school top professors and facilities but i’m not huge fan of texas.Vanderbilt Very hot girls also top academics and very beautiful surroundings…Emory just like the plus Atlant which is a fantastic city…

on a side note, pomona is probably the most selective of all of these schools, followed by rice

EDIT: and when i say probably, i mean definitely
