Pomona ED Thread

I’m the same way! It’s hard because obviously the odds are very long, so I don’t want to get all excited for something that’s probably going to be anti-climactic…but…either way I hope the envelope comes a little earlier than the 15th :)

How long has everyone been interested in Pomona? When did you know it was your first choice?

I had never even heard of Pomona before I had the opportunity to visit in 2009, but once I researched and visited, it was my new dream school and has been for over a year!

I had known about Pomona for a year or so. My dad read about the Claremont colleges in a college guidebook, and he already knew that Pomona would be right for me (at least among the Claremonts). My guidance counselor has also recommended the Claremont colleges.

I visited in senior fall right before the ED I deadline. I thought Pomona was a perfect fit so I made a quick decision to do ED I! Haha.

If anyone is interested, the ny times says 236 students applied ED to Pomona (234 last year)

the entire list: http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/12/early-admission-2011/

Interesting…Does anyone know what percentage of Pomona’s admitted student pool is admitted through ED I? Or ED in general? Just curious :)

Ya, when I visited last month, they said that they admit no more than 30% of the incoming class through ED (both I and II)

^And their incoming class is what, 360? 390? So basically around 125 people through EDI and EDII.

And has anyone had Pomona call about first quarter grades? I happened to be in the guidance office today and my counselor mentioned that they’d asked her to fax them a day or two ago. It probably doesn’t mean anything haha but it still freaked me out.

Ahriana, I pulled out my calculator to figure it out but then I saw your post. Thanks you guys :)

Not that I know of…I thought we were just supposed to send our senior grades by like Feb. 15 if we got accepted? I didn’t know they would request the first quarter grades from our guidance counselor. Haha. That’s weird.

They asked my D’s school for first term grades last year, both for her and a classmate. I gather it’s quite normal.

Yeah, I guess they really do care about your high school transcript :)

Oh and you all might appreciate this lol – one of my teachers was there for this whole Pomona-quarter-grade conversation, and he proceeded to interrogate me about what in the world is Pomona and why would I want to go to California and sarcastically be all “oh you want to go to a fancy liberal arts school…you want to learn things you won’t actually use in your life…” haha he was teasing, but partly serious, which is the scary part!

Anyway, it’s officially less than a week (hopefully)! Good luck to all of you!!

Haha that’s hilarious. But yeah, I think tons of people think that about LACs. What state are you from?

Good luck to all of you too! It’s so close now…

Deep breaths everyone…

My S is a freshman at Pomona, and we have a friend who applied ED this year, so I have been following this thread. You guys are even making ME nervous! Lol. Fingers crossed for all of you. :)

Bengalmom: How does he like Pomona so far?

Thinking happy thoughts for all of you! Still can remember D’s acceptance that arrived before the publicized deadline (and that was in December 2004!).

@VirologyNerd - I’m in Virginia, kind of the middle of nowhere to be honest. I wish I was on the west coast so the letter would come sooner!

MomOGold, My S absolutely loves Pomona. I think he truly feels that he chose the very best school for him. One of the nicest factors for him has been the weather. We live in the Rockies, and he LOVES snow, but he has enjoyed wearing shorts and flip flops for much of the fall, as well as rubbing in that fact to his friends back home on FB. :)

I know he is working harder than he ever needed to in high school, but he is really enjoying being around students who are all bright, interesting, and driven, UNLIKE his high school.

He is taking a language class at Scripps, so he has come to appreciate the advantages of the consortium right off the bat. To say nothing of all the various dining options he enjoys because of the consortium. Steak night, anyone?

This week on the last day of classes Pomona brought in a bunch of puppies and bunnies to provide a bit of stress relief. My son thoroughly enjoyed sitting with a tiny Jack Russell puppy that nearly fell asleep in his lap. :)

Thanks for the detailed response, Bengalmom! Pomona seems like the perfect fit for my son. I’ll be crossing my fingers that he gets good news next week. :)

@Ahriana: Ooooh cool! I have also been on my tiptoes. I’ve been checking the mailbox anxiously every day now, even though it probably won’t come for a few more days. Haha.

Awww it’s so nice to have everyone’s support! I wish everyone else luck too :)

Me too! I can’t even look at my mail box without freaking out a little!
Good Luck everyone!

Here’s a story that might distract you from the waiting for a bit:
My mother is evil.
Today, when I came home, she promptly told me that an envelope had come for me in the mail and was on my desk. Thinking it was from Pomona, I ran to my desk and had a mini-heart attack when I saw a small white envelope lying there face down. I slowly picked it up and turned it over only to see that it was just a stupid credit card offer from Capital One! While I was in agony, my mom just stood in the doorway laughing.
Ahh… just gotta love those supportive parents. :)

^Ouch. That’s cruel.

My understanding was that it won’t come before the 15th… should I be checking my mail every day already? I live on the east coast so I’m expecting to get it later than most of you guys anyway.

Jealous of Penn/Swarthmore/etc. They got their decision already.
