[Editorial Board: Healthy Competition Helps Everyone](http://tsl.pomona.edu/articles/2012/2/3/opinions/858-editorial-board-healthy-competition-helps-everyone)

Both articles are from Pomona’s weekly newspaper, The Student Life.
The first takes the appearance of neutrality but is really a thinly-veiled mockery at the rivaling neighbor.
I love Pomona, and I hope the second one is a more accurate representation of the attitudes of Pomona students. While competition is inevitable and beneficial in moderate measure, it isn’t when it means gloating over each others’ failures and misfortunes. The 5Cs should be more cohesive and stand together in solidarity when any one of them is in difficulty.

I read both articles…they seemed really neutral to me?

I don’t know how you can say the first one is a “thinly-veiled mockery at the rivaling neighbor,” when it is very clearly a neutral, journalistic report of the incident with quotes from students, faculty, Gann, and outside sources. There was no opinion that I could find, but perhaps you could point to some specific passages that show the apparent mockery.

“While the U.S. News and World Report will not revise previously published ranking lists, the publication’s Director of Data Research Robert Morse said that once the updated average scores from CMC are received, the Report will recalculate and publish updated rankings on its blog…The SAT scores are weighted by 7.5 percent in calculating the U.S News “Best Colleges” rankings. However, high test scores can also factor into the reputation of a school, and students’ reputational surveys hold a weight of 22.5 percent in the rankings calculations.”

It takes the appearance of neutrality, but the very subject of the article–CMC’s future ranking–betrays the intense (and rather unhealthy) mutual rivalry between the two institutions.

I’m not supporting CMC against Pomona (they should not be in antagonism!). As I said, I love Pomona–very much. In fact, I applied to Pomona for RD but didn’t apply to CMC. I’m anxiously waiting for the decision, and hope to find myself in an environment friendly not just within Pomona but across the entire 5Cs if I am fortunate enough to be accepted and choose to attend the college.

I see your point, but I don’t think that it was the intent of the author. I know there’s a bit of a history between Pomona and CMC, but there really was no opinion or spin in that particular article.

EDIT: Good luck!

Agree with zrath. This is a fact-based article.

Ok guys I probably was a bit over-sensitive. Perhaps the articles are not so biased, but rivalry between the two schools certainly exists.

@zrathustra, Thanks! :)

shootastar- If you are worried about rivalry between CMC and Pomona- don’t be. It’s really overblown by some on this board, and I don’t really get it. Ds graduated Pomona recently, and he has never, in four years there or since, said anything negative about CMC, or commented on any rivalry. And we’re close. He has only had positive things to say about the other colleges. I know several of his Pomona friends, and he’s currently working with a couple of CMC grads. They are all wonderful, friendly and smart young people. Believe me, the student bodies of all of the colleges in the consortium have much more in common than they have differences, and most students know that and appreciate what they have. I think that the privilege of attending one of these great schools is even more apparent after graduation, when you’re in the working world.
Good luck to you, wherever you decide to go!

moonchild-Thanks a lot. It’s great to hear that the 5Cs are a great community (as I’ve always thought) and not a bunch of rivaling colleges with only superficial links :)
