Poor and bad school

Hi, well i was reading on these forums about people chances and what not, and i started to become depressed. I am the most passionate student to come from my town, i work hard, get good grades and do many activitys, yet I live in a low economic town, and i go to a school that is one of the worst where i live since i dont have alot of money and am zoned for a poor school. I was just wondering if George Washington would be a school that would look at how i stand out from the rest of the student at my school, even though i dont go to a good private school, and is there even a chance for me to get into it or not. I am only a an incoming Junior right now, but it is my dream to go to gw. Please help me!!!

It definitely can be daunting to see all the stats of the people on this board. But not to worry - good schools let in a wide variety of kids, and lots of kids have different talents in different areas that don’t show up in stats.

You guidance counselor will submit a school profile with your transcript. The profile will describe the economic status of the school, the grading system, state requirements, etc. So you will be understood in the context of your school. And that’s why class rank is considered - the idea is that a top 10% student will tend to rise to whatever environment he/she finds him/herself in.

The admissions people also take overall school into account when they look at your SAT’s. If you come from the richest area of NY, and go to a top school, you are expected to have benefited from that type of education, with a commensurate SAT score. In other words, if you get a 1330 in the worst school in your state, it is often understood as a “better” score than getting a 1400 if you live in a ritzy suburb of NYC.

In the meantime, you can do what is within your control. Continue to get good grades, study hard, stay in the top 10% of your class if you can, read the SAT prep book, and focus your spare time on the extracurriculars as you have so far. It will all help you a lot. Good luck.
