Hello,

I have a major in philosophy. However, I did really well in math in high school, and I wanted to do something more practical for a degree, so I changed my major to economics and philosophy. I figured that the economics program would be chalk-full of analysis, quantitative thinking, and problem solving. Much to my surprise, most of the courses I have taken involved nothing but rote memorization. The only math or analysis in some of these courses involved plugging values into a formula that was also supposed to be memorized! Now, I’m not good at memorization at all, and this has really lowered my GPA. My question is: is this typical of most economics programs? I had assumed memorization would apply more to fields like biology, foreign languages, or some of the softer social sciences. In other words, this is not what I thought I was getting into. In any event, if you’ve had any experience in economics, I’d like to hear if you’ve found something similar.

Thank you.
