Poor GPA: chances? recommendation?

Hi, I’m a junior right now, and I’m really worried as to my college future.
As of now, my GPAs are pretty horrible (sophomore troubles), and really seems misplaced next to my other stats.

Asian (Korean)

Sunny Hills High School, Fullerton, California

school size ~1,600; public. california distinguished school, etc. Among top in state.

no class rank system

Unweighted/weighted GPA : 3.3/3.8

(new) SAT score : 2190. Planning to take again; goal at least over 2250.
II Writing doesn’t count now, but 770. Taking IIC May; aiming for and expecting 800.

4 APs right now, 2 IBs. (By next year, count will be 7 APs, 6 IBs.)

EC: the main things I can think of the top of my head are

 • to-be 4 years of girls tennis team,
 • school newspaper staff, editor
 • cabinet of JSA (a debate club)
 • part of the publication of a literary magazine
 • going to launch off my own Animal Club, to come out in a couple weeks
 • I volunteer most actively at an animal shelter (Can’t keep track of how many hours I did. Over 300+ hours though, for sure.)
 • interned at a vet’s office for 3 straight years now
 • I’ve had summer jobs: institution secretrary, tutor, graphics teacher

I’m hoping to do research this upcoming summer at Cal State Fullerton, but that’s not a guarantee.
As for awards, I have several in Journalism, for various competitions I participated in.

As of now, I’m keenly interesting in being a vet, and I ideally want to go pre-vet. But I heard pre-vet is harder than pre-med, so that’s out of the picture.
Plan now is going biology for now. :
UCDavis seems good for vet, but it’s utterly boring otherwise. Anyways, my dad is an alumni from Davis and is a vet right now. Just another piece of info.

Anyways, can I get some analysis of how bad off I am, and maybe suggest what colleges I can safely target with my stats?

****** And how to improve my GPA? I really need good advice for this.
College courses during summer? :(??? *********

Thanks so much. <3

You can definately get into Davis.

Taking college courses would improve your GPA, just make sure you don’t take obviously easy classes. Also, if you get 5s on your APs, colleges might recognize that your school is harder than most others.

:\ Oh, and is Cornell just out of reach for me? I heard it’s really good for those planning to go to vet for grad, and since so, it’s become my dream school. Is there even a remote chance I can get into Cornell? What could I do to improve my chances?

If your junior grades and first semester senior grades are really good, that would offset your sophomore year grades. They look for an improving trend. It sounds like your main extracurricular activities concern being a vet. Colleges like to see passion and long-term commitment to one or two activities rather than casual involvement in many activities. Being pre-vet is not a major, but a pre-professional program. You can major in bio and still be pre-vet. It is hard to judge your ivy league chances without knowing junior and senior grades and your final SAT scores. Applying to any Ivy League school is something of a crap shoot anyway.

Hi
I’m a latino Jr with
3.2/3.8 GPA Unweighted/weighted

School Paper 10, 11, 12 (Layout/Design editor)
Bio Club 10,11,12

Badminton Club 9,10,11,12

Camp counselor 4yrs

All honors courses with Jr/Sr year having AP’s
And my first choices are Villanova and Bucknell (Brother attends)
Are they to far of a stretch for me?
And when looking for schools do you look at schools that will usually accept students with GPA’s around your weighted or un weighted ( I wasn’t sure but then again if its un-weighted I’d be on level playing field with some kid in my school with all regents courses that got straight 95’s seems weird to me) and do schools really discount Freshman yr?
Go easy on me…thanks

Not that it matters to myself but people sometimes don’t appreciate others “high-jacking” their threads. Some people get mad :</p>

Well I didnt mean to get them mad but I think it would be ridiculous to make a new thread with the exact same name/subject…and if it does then sorry syneria
