Poor GPA: chances? recommendations?

Hi, I’m a junior right now, and I’m really worried as to my college future.

As of now, my GPAs are pretty horrible (sophomore troubles), and really seems misplaced next to my other stats.
• Unweighted/weighted GPA : 3.3/3.8
  • (new) SAT score : 2190. Planning to take again; goal at least over 2250.
Guess writing doesn’t count now, but 770. Taking IIC May; fully aiming for and expecting a 800.
• no class rank
  • school size ~1,600; public. california distinguished school, etc. Among top in state.
  • 4 APs right now, 2 IBs. (By next year, count will be 7 APs, 6 IBs.)

EC: the main things I can think of the top of my head are

  • to-be 4 years of girls tennis team,
  • school newspaper staff, editor
  • cabinet of JSA (a debate club)
  • part of the publication of a literary magazine
  • going to launch off my own Animal Club, to come out in a couple weeks
  • I volunteer most actively at an animal shelter
  • interned at a vet’s office for 3 straight years now
  • I’ve had summer jobs: institution secretrary, tutor, graphics teacher

I’m hoping to do research this upcoming summer at Cal State Fullerton, but that’s not a guarantee.
As for awards, I have several in Journalism, for various competitions I participated in.

As of now, I’m keenly interesting in being a vet, so I’m planning to go biology for now. :\ Pre-vet is harder than pre-med, I heard, so I guess no chance for me of that.

Anyways, can I get some analysis of my chances (to various types of colleges), and maybe what colleges I can safely target with my stats?

:*( And how to improve my GPA?

Thanks so much. <3

Don’t be worried. A 3.3 (let alone 3.8) is NOT terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

You may not have a good chance at the Ivies, but you have a huge chance at state schools. Just remember to have some backups.

:\ Been kind of embarrassed to say, but my dream school is Cornell. Heard that it has a good percentage go on to vet.

If I can pull off getting straight As this upcoming semester and the first semester of senior year, do you think there’s even a remote chance for me to go to Cornell?

__; Also, what other EC would be good, and what else can I do to look better to private colleges?

i agree with renin. it sounds like you have nice grades. compared to you and most people on CC, my grades are awful. yet, i still managed to get into uc santa barbara, i, sc, and r. ucla, berkley, and sd (strange) are still pending.

if decisions were based on gpa alone, i would’ve been rejected from most (or all) of the uc’s. you have nice grades and you have some vet/animal related ec’s…i’m sure you’ll get accepted into some schools with good vet programs. :)

I think you will get it. I totally see that you’re dedicated to being a vet. If it makes any difference, I would accept you!
